Any suggestion there could be a “whole new deal” for Brexit is “totally not in the real world," Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar says.

"Listening to what (Boris Johnson) said today, I got the impression he was talking about a whole new deal - a better deal for Britain," he tells RTE's Six One News. "That is not going to happen."

“Confidence and enthusiasm is not a substitute for a European policy.”

Mr Varadkar says a no-deal Brexit is still very unlikely, arguing “there are enough people in the British Parliament who won’t do that to their country".

As well as being made foreign secretary, Dominic Raab has been appointed the first secretary of state.

It doesn’t give him any specific powers and doesn’t make him deputy prime minister.

But it does mean that he ranks as the most senior of the secretaries of state.

The last person to hold the title was Damian Green, but after he left government in 2017, it was left vacant.

  18. 'Big and radical clear out' - Kuenssbergpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 24 July 2019

    BBC News Channel

    Laura Kuenssberg

Boris Johnson is showing he "wants to do things very differently indeed", the BBC's political editor says.

"In the last hour... he has lost 15 cabinet ministers from Theresa May's team - that is an enormous number. That is a big and radical clear out."

Sajid Javid is "likely" to be the next chancellor of the exchequer, while Dominic Raab could be foreign secretary she says.

Priti Patel, meanwhile, is expected to be the new home secretary.

If Mr Raab is given the job it would be a "big step up for someone of his experience", she says.
