  1. Recap: Johnson’s first full day as PMpublished at 19:43 British Summer Time 25 July 2019

That’s where we are leaving our live coverage for this evening, as Boris Johnson’s first full day as the UK’s new prime minister draws to a close.

Ministerial appointments are continuing, and you can find all the latest here.

Earlier, Mr Johnson told the Commons the route to a new Brexit deal would be to persuade the EU to “abolish” the Irish border backstop plan in the current agreement.

He also said EU citizens living in the UK would have their rights protected – but No 10 was unable to confirm this would be underpinned by new legislation.

Labour's Jeremy Corbyn said people "do not trust" the new PM to deliver on his promises.

    Leo VaradkarImage source, Reuters

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has said the prospect of a no-deal Brexit is "a British threat".

At a news conference after a meeting of his cabinet in County Donegal, Mr Varadkar said: "I hope the new UK prime minister hasn't chosen no deal, but that will be up to them."

Asked if he thought Boris Johnson was bluffing about no deal, Mr Varadkar replied: "I don't know." He repeated that the position of Ireland and the EU "had not changed" and that "without the backstop there is no withdrawal agreement".
