Summary

  • Labour has overturned huge Conservative majorities to win Thursday's two by-elections in Mid Bedfordshire and Tamworth

  • "It's history in the making," hails party leader Sir Keir Starmer, saying the results were extraordinary but he won't get carried away

  • Tories have blamed it on low turnout and their voters staying at home - with Education Secretary Gillian Keegan saying there's "no real love for Labour" on the doorstep

  • Labour emerged victorious in Mid Beds - Nadine Dorries' former seat - which the Tories have held for more than 90 years and had a majority of more than 24,000

  • The result shows “nowhere is off limits", said new MP Alistair Strathern, a former maths teacher

  • The Conservatives were also defeated in Tamworth, where Labour's Sarah Edwards overturned a majority of more than 19,000

  1. Tamworth's new Labour MP: This is a historic resultpublished at 03:10 British Summer Time 20 October 2023

The new Labour MP for Tamworth Sarah Edwards describes her victory as "historic".

She tells the BBC it demonstrates people are "fed up" and not seeing the Conservatives give a positive vision for the country.

Edwards denies she has won by default because of a low turnout, with many Tory voters staying at home.

"I think what it actually demonstrates is Conservative voters have voted Labour – I have spoken to many of them," she adds.

This is a significant swing to Labour - 23.9%.

That’s higher than the swing in the Selby by-election earlier this year.

Labour tonight are very pleased, stressing this was not a target seat for them - instead the 57th safest Tory seat in the country.

She thanked her team for their "sacrifices" during the campaign.

"I would like to thank the people of Tamworth and the villages who have put their trust in me to be their Member of Parliament," she said.

"I have made promises to you that I intend to keep.

"I will be your voice in Westminster and challenge this government to get a better deal for Tamworth - you have my solemn promise."

She ended by calling on the government to call a general election.

“To those who have given us their trust, and those considering doing so, Labour will spend every day acting in your interests and focused on your priorities.

"Labour will give Britain its future back.”

  11. Uxbridge by-election result looking like a mirage - Curticepublished at 02:35 British Summer Time 20 October 2023

Elections expert Prof Sir John Curtice of the University of Strathclyde has been giving us his take on what we've been hearing tonight.

"I think it is already clear from what we are hearing from the counts Labour have either won or at least come close to winning these by-elections," he says.

"We are seeing some by-elections with some very substantial swings from Conservative to Labour.

"That will indicate two things, one being that the lowest swing in Uxbridge is more like a mirage than a pathway to a Conservative recovery and the result in Selby might be the better guide as to where we are at.

"The last time we had swings this size was in the 1992-1997 Parliament which ended in a substantial Conservative defeat."

  12. Why is winning Mid Beds so important?published at 02:29 British Summer Time 20 October 2023

    Andrew Sinclair
    BBC East, political editor

With the general election probably less than a year away, a win in Mid Bedfordshire would set the political tone for weeks to come - it would give momentum to the opposition if one of them were to win; hope to the Conservatives if they can hold the seat.

It is also seen as by the parties as classic swing-voter territory.

Once described to me as “aspirational middle England" where people have worked hard to afford their own homes, many are commuters, many expect to take several holidays a year.

As my colleague Ben Schofield discovered, the constituency has some of the highest employment and home ownership rates in the country.

These aspirational people are not politically tribal - they back the party most likely to help them better their lives.

While not usually a swing seat, Mid Beds is close to constituencies like Bedford, Milton Keynes, Stevenage and Harlow - some of the main battlegrounds at the next general election.

Shadow science secretary Peter Kyle, who has been running the Labour campaign in Mid Bedfordshire, is sounding confident.

He tells our political correspondent Helen Catt: "We don’t know exactly what the result is yet but it has been a good night for Labour both here and in Tamworth."

Kyle says winning Mid Bedfordshire "was always a moonshot" for Labour and it "would be the biggest by-election shock in history".

  18. Things 'looking encouraging' in Tamworth, Labour MP sayspublished at 01:57 British Summer Time 20 October 2023

Labour MP Stephanie Peacock says things are "certainly looking encouraging" for her party in Tamworth.

The MP for Barnsley East tells our political correspondent Ione Wells that winning the Staffordshire seat would be "historic" for Labour.

She denies there's been a lack of enthusiasm for her party on Tamworth's doorsteps, saying voters are "fed up with the government" and worried about the state of the economy, as well as local issues like potholes.

“If we managed to win this tonight that means Conservative voters have come out but they’ve voted Labour - because the majority is so big and the swing is so big they need to have switched to us for us to win.”

She says her party does not have to win previously safe Tory seats like Tamworth at the general election, but a win tonight would be "a very, very good sign" for next year.

Speaking about the size of the majority the Conservatives had in Tamworth, she also says: "The fact that we're even on the pitch in this election is quite extraordinary."
