Despite the rain, thunder and floods yesterday, turnout was significantly higher than at the last General Election – it was 80% in Brentwood and Uttlesford.

A large majority for Leave in Essex was anticipated. Many will be cheering and some will be partying today.

But there were 376,371 people who voted Remain. Since then, they've travelled to work, taken the kids to school, or gone to the supermarket and worried about what their future holds.

"This is an excellent result for the British people. We can now forge a new relationship with our friends and neighbours in Europe based on co-operation and free trade, not on our participation in an evolving superstate which most people do not want.

"We will now see Parliament's restoration as our supreme law-making body. We will also regain our own seat at the table of the World Trade Organisation, which means that we can start to negotiate deals ourselves without having to wait in the slow lane with Brussels holding things up.”

  13. EU Referendum: What happens nextpublished at 09:08 British Summer Time 24 June 2016

The process for the UK's withdrawal from the European Union is not a simple process.

    EU Referendum
    • The UK remains a member of the EU at this stage
    • The process has already begun with David Cameron announcing he is stepping down as Prime Minister
    • A statement to Parliament will follow on Monday - or earlier if MPs demand a special sitting
    • Leaving the EU is not automatic. The UK's departure has to be negotiated with the remaining members within two years
    • The European Parliament has a veto over any new agreement on relationship between UK and EU
    • Britain could technically ignore 'rules' and simply write the EU out of its laws, but that would not make future negotiations and easier
