    In this film, BBC Scotland's Cameron Buttle reports from the remote volcanic archipelago of St Kilda.

    The baton was carried by open-water swimmer Colin MacLeod and was met by the Convenor of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Norman MacDonald.

    St. Kilda is one of the most remote parts of the British Isles, lying 41 miles west of the Outer Hebrides. The island chain which shows signs of more than 2000 years of human occupation was evacuated in 1930, when the final 36 islanders left.

    Baton bearer Christopher Bennett carries the baton at Liniclate School, otherwise known as Sgoil Lionacleit, on the Isle of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides earlier today.

    Whilst on the road to the lighthouse for another series of baton bearers, two police runners - one holding the baton aloft - appeared over the horizon silhouetted by the sun.

    What this place lacks in population, more than makes up for in scenery on a perfect day like today.

    Earlier, the baton visited the The Butt of Lewis Lighthouse.

    It was built by David Stevenson in 1862. It is a red brick tower 37 metres high and there are 168 steps to the top.

    It was originally manned by three keepers who lived at the station with their families.

    It was automated on the 30 March 1998 and is now remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board's headquarters in Edinburgh.

    The station's claim to fame, according to the 'Guinness Book of Records' some years ago, is that it was the windiest spot in the United Kingdom.

    Crowds gathered to support Colin on his leg of the journey on the island of Hirta.

    Colin swam from Ullapool to Stornoway in relay style to raise over £20,000 in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

    Gerry Gallacher emailed in to let us know about his appearance in his local paper, the Paisley Daily Express, for being a baton bearer.

    He said: "I have been selected to carry the baton in Renfrewshire and I have been recently interviewed for an article in the local paper.

    "I am really looking forward to the day when I carry the baton on the 17th of July, I look forward to meeting your team."

    The baton has been to St Kilda on the Western Isles today and Margaret Nally has been in touch via email about its Australian namesake:

    "Still following the baton relay, just thought you may like to know about our seaside suburb of St Kilda, here in Melbourne, Australia.

    "Our St Kilda was named after the schooner 'Lady of St Kilda'. She was named after a Lady Grange who was imprisoned on the island of Hirta- the largest of the St Kilda group.

    "St Kilda, Melbourne is a very popular seaside suburb. Some of you may already have visited us.

    "Still enjoying the live streaming (we do have the same mobile problems out in the countryside)

  17. Commonwealth Flags on display in Stornowaypublished at 16:58 British Summer Time 8 July 2014

    Three new flags have been added to the collection of European flags on display near the harbour in Stornoway today.

    The Commonwealth Games 2014 flag has been raised to mark the Western Isles leg of the Queen's Baton Relay which passes through the islands today.

    The flags of Wales and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have also been added to the display in respect of the "Support a Second Team" Commonwealth Games 2014 Legacy initiative.

    As part of the initiative every area in Scotland has been twinned with at least one 'second team' to support at Glasgow 2014.
