    A special piece called "Fanfare with Flourish" composed by John Wallace was played inside the Conservatoire to celebrate the arrival of the baton.

    Gordon Matheson, Glasgow City Council leader, says "excitement is palpable" as the Commonwealth Games are about to begin.

    He told BBC News he had never been prouder of the people of Glasgow, as the baton relay returns after travelling to 70 Commonwealth nations and territories.

    Mr Matheson said that it won't be business as usual when Glasgow doubles the city population over the next two weeks, but the Games will provide a lasting legacy for Glasgow.

    Two of the men behind the design of the Queen's baton, Will Mitchell and Michael Aldridge, are taking part in the relay.

    The last time Will and Michael saw the baton they waved it goodbye as it set off on a global adventure around the Commonwealth.

    In the Designing the Baton video Will reveals it was "both a privilege and an honour to design the baton".

    He carried the baton at Glasgow School of Art, where he studied industrial product design.

    Peter has dedicated much of his life to squash, offering his time six days a week.

    He has coach the sport for over 30 years and is a volunteer referee at squash matches throughout Scotland and is due to referee at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

    Peter suffered severe injuries in conflict and spent three years in hospital and was told he would never walk again. Two and a half years later, Peter was transferred to a rehab ward and began walking.

    For decades George has been saving lives on the River Clyde with the Glasgow Humane Society.

    According to one of several people who nominated him, he's a shining light who "lives, works and sleeps for the community of Glasgow by ensuring safety on Glasgow's waterways."

    The retired art teacher and keen rower has been involved in saving 1,500 people from the river.

    The sun is starting to shine in Glasgow city centre as Jennifer Sancroft hands the baton to Chloe McGarvey.

    Chloe is a netball player, who has represented her school, local club and Glasgow district.

    She is also one of the youngest trainee coaches and part of the Glasgow Netball Associations coaching mentor programme.

    She was recently selected as the lead coach for the Glasgow Academy U13 squad.

    James is a successful badminton player and recently won Class 1 gold in the Bath Special Olympics, in both singles and men's doubles.

    He is the British champion in his class and and is described as "a powerful role model".

    Gordon has competed for and coached the GB Paralympic and Special Olympic teams.

    Originally from Bishopbriggs, Gordon's sporting career took off at the Sport for Athletics with Cerebral Palsy in Denmark in 1982.

    For the next two decades he represented Scotland and Great Britain in every major athletics event, competing in track, swimming and football events. Gordon now dedicates his spare time to coaching young disabled athletes at Red Star Athletics Club in Glasgow.

    Morton is very active with his church, the Salvation Army, and Abbeyfield Nursing Home.

    The 90-year-old completed the West Highland Way last year and he still plays golf and bridge.

    The people who nominated Morton say "despite his age and has not given up and still has a thirst for life".

    The summer festival in Glasgow's Merchant City is celebrating its 13th year and will be specially extended to 11 days to coincide with the Commonwealth Games.

    The Merchant City Festival runs from 24 July until 3 August and is part of the Festival 2014 celebrations.

    The key venues for entertainment and sport throughout the Games will be, the Glasgow Green Live Zone, Merchant City Festival, Kelvingrove Bandstand and BBC at the Quay.

    The Barras Market is an iconic part of Glasgow's East End and is also home to the famous Barrowland Ballroom.

    It is the first day and the baton is travelling around the Glasgow city centre.

    The baton will spend three days in the city and 400 baton bearers will carry it before it arrives at the Games opening ceremony at Celtic Park on Wednesday evening.
