Robin, Edinburgh: Why can't HMRC organise excise duty on a per unit basis, something it could do with minimal amendments to existing legislation. This would implement a pay for what you get policy avoiding cheap strong alcohol, and the money would go to the Treasury not the alcohol producers.

Duncan Bryson, Larkhall: Minnium pricing is a nonsense - addicts will get their 'fix' whatever it may be at whatever price.

Peter, Glasgow: Gave up drinking on 10 June 1990 with the birth of my daughter...never missed a hangover yet.

Anna, Inverurie: Many of my friends will suggest having a glass of wine after a stressful day. Why not go for a jog, have a hot bath, an early night, a cup of tea? And what message are we showing our children if we do turn to drink under stress? Surely we need to demonstrate to them all the alternative ways of coping with the strains of life.

Jennifer: When perceived middle class and parents are giving their 14 and 15 years olds a lot of alcohol to take to parties then there needs a complete change in society. This then leads to enormous drinking problems in their early 20s and above.

End Prostitution Now claims the move would decriminalise victims of sexual exploitation and protect vulnerable prostitutes.

But those who work in the industry say there is no evidence such laws reduce the amount of sex work and warn the move could push prostitution further underground.

Liz Curran Women's Support Project, which backs the initiative, said: "The crux of this campaign is about challenging the demand for prostitution which, is inherently harmful to women."

Scotpep is the sex workers rights organisation, which works with prostitutes on the streets and in saunas.

"Molly", which is not her real name, is a member, she said: "There are huge harms associated with this law and there is a huge increase in violence with laws like it. Why not tackle poverty rather than what people are doing to survive?"

Northern Ireland recently became the first UK country to make buying sexual services a criminal offence.
