    The storm that brought near-record snowfall to the eastern US has caused heavy rain and high winds in much of Scotland.

    The Met Office has issued five yellow "be aware" warnings for Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, external.

    It has forecast southerly gales and also heavy rain for parts of southern, western and northern Scotland.

    The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued almost 40 flood warnings, external where flooding is expected.

    A number of issues for drivers in Dumfries and Galloway this morning with heavy rain affecting most routes.

    A tree has blocked the A708 north of Moffat and "considerable surface water" was reported on the A75 near Mouswald and on other stretches of that route.

    An earlier accident on the A74(M) near Moffat has now been cleared.

    The Scottish Professional Football League said it had taken the decision following advice from police and security staff at Tynecastle Stadium.

    A special meeting of the Scottish Cabinet is being held today with talks focused on the oil and gas industry.

    Speaking ahead of the meeting, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said discussions would examine what action was required to "maximise economic recovery" in the North Sea.

    The session will be attended by Lena Wilson, chief executive of Scottish Enterprise and chairwoman of the energy jobs task force.

    Prof John Curtice from Strathclyde University told the Good Morning Scotland programme that the September 2014 vote had left an indelible impression on the political scene.

    He said: "The referendum has made independence and Scotland's constitutional position the central issue of Scottish electoral politics.

    "The truth is that given 45% of people voted yes, and there is no sign of that diminishing - that guarantees the SNP about 45% of the vote before you start., unless the opposition parties can persuade people in the next 100 days that this election, unlike the last election, should not be another re-run of the referendum in September 2014."
