  7. Snow causing traffic problems on the M8 and M80published at 16:29 Greenwich Mean Time 28 February 2018

Stein Connolly, Transport Scotland, told BBC Radio Scotland's Newsdrive programme that there were a couple of places on the M80 and the M8 where vehicles were getting stuck.

He said HGVs were finding it hard to get traction even on small hills, and with heavy snow falling gritters were finding it hard to get through.

"We've got all our equipment out there - our ploughs and our gritters - and we're trying to make sure we can get these clear," he added.

"We're working with Police Scotland to try to get these people clear as soon as we can. The last thing we want is people to be stuck in traffic at this time of the day."

He said it was proving "very, very difficult" for gritters to keep on top of the situation.

""What we're seeing is blizzard condition, ploughs are going by and the roads are turning white behind them."

With more heavy snow forecast overnight, he urged people to consider whether they really need to make their journeys.

The blustery wind and drifting snow have caused major problems on rural roads in the north-east, with visibility in some stretches down to just a metre.

Insp Neil Morrison, of Police Scotland's roads policing department, told BBC Radio Scotland: "You can start your journey in one place in the north-east and it can be reasonably ok for your journey, but very, very quickly, due to the winds and drifting snow, visibility can deteriorate to next to nothing."

    Quote Message

Our advice would be if the conditions do deteriorate, as is suggested, then if it's not safe to travel, turn round, go back to where you were. Consider other options and if it's not safe to travel, don't travel."

    Insp Neil Morrison, Police Scotland
