  1. University of West of Scotland closed tomorrow

    A spokesman for the university said its campuses would remain closed, following the travel advice from the Scottish government and Police Scotland.

    “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates on our social media channels tomorrow as to when the campuses are expected to reopen," he added.

    Anyone with admission interviews on the Scottish campuses will be contacted over the next few days to reschedule appointments.

  2. Many schools in Dumfries and Galloway to remain closed tomorrow

    Schools that are closed today in Dumfries and Galloway "will likely be closed again tomorrow", according to the region's virtual operations support team.

    A number of schools have already made the decision to remain closed tomorrow and the full list is here.

  3. Schools in Fife will be closed again on Thursday.

    The move has been confirmed by a Fife Council spokeswoman.

    She said texts and emails will be sent to parents when schools reopen.

  5. Hospital procedures affected by severe weather

    The heavy snow is having an adverse effect on the NHS, with health service bosses taking the decision to cancel non-urgent procedures.

    A number of operations have been cancelled by NHS Lothian, and it has postponed its evening outpatients clinic.

    In Lanarkshire, all outpatient clinics and treatment room appointments have been cancelled for the rest of Wednesday and until 11:00 on Thursday.

    NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has cancelled routine elective procedures and hospital outpatients appointments on Thuresday.

    The West of Scotland breast screen mobile units have also cancelled appointments in Motherwell, Wishaw, Barrhead, Renfrew, Paisley, Erskine and Easterhouse.

  6. Glasgow airport closed for the rest of the day

    Glasgow airport has confirmed that there will be no further flights to or from the airport for the remainder of the day.

    A spokesman said a large number of flights had been cancelled.

    He added: "Further heavy snowfall is forecast and we will provide updates regarding tomorrow’s scheduled services later this evening.

    "We would advise passengers not to travel to the airport and anyone with travel plans should contact their airline directly for specific flight information."

  9. The 'beast' looks likely to boost Scotland's ski industry

    Scotland's mountain snowsports industry has already had more than double the number of "skier days" that were recorded for the whole of last season.

    A skier day means one person who skis or snowboards on one day. Many of the same people return to the slopes several times during the season.

    Ski-Scotland said more than 132,000 of the "days" had been recorded so far.

    Scotland's mountain centres are The Lecht, Glenshee, Nevis Range, CairnGorm Mountain and Glencoe Mountain.

    The sites have had frequent snowfalls and spells of low temperatures since December.

    Stormy weather, dubbed the Beast from the East, is expected to bring further accumulations of snow to Scotland's mountains.

    The previous season was described by the industry as "challenging" because of a lack of snow and mild weather.

    Ski-Scotland's chairman Andy Meldrum said: "We estimate that already this winter we have generated over £13.2m for the economy, of which at least £10m will have been spent 'off the hill' in accommodation, shops, eateries and filling stations."

  11. Airlines cancel flights to and from Scottish airports

    Flybe has cancelled all its flights to and from Scottish airports for the remainder of Wednesday, as a result of the severe weather.

    British Airways says return flights between London airports and Scotland have also been cancelled due to the Met Office issuing its red weather alert.

    Meanwhile, a spokesman for Edinburgh airport said it was expecting to experience some disruption on Wednesday afternoon.

    "Please check with your airline regarding your flight status before travelling to the airport,” he said.

    A Falkirk Council spokesman said: "All schools and other educational establishments in Falkirk will be closed Thursday 1 March following the latest information issued in respect of the extreme weather forecast for the area.

    "Further updates about the plans for school openings for Friday 2 March will be provided as soon as we are aware of the most up-to-date weather situation."

  16. Second day of closure for many Dumfries and Galloway schools

    An increasing number of Dumfries and Galloway schools have decided to stay shut again tomorrow.

    The vast majority were closed today and at least 19 have already indicated they will remain so on Thursday.

    All schools in the neighbouring Scottish Borders were shut today and will be closed again tomorrow.

  18. More schools to remain closed tomorrow

    Local authorities for both North Ayrshire and Renfrewshire have confirmed that all their schools will be closed tomorrow.

    All West Lothian schools will also be closed.

    ScotRail has said there will be NO train services in the RED weather warning area tonight, or first thing tomorrow morning. Most train services will have stopped by 15:00.

  20. University of Glasgow to remain closed

    Students and staff at the University of Glasgow have been told that it will be closed again on Thursday.

    A spokesman for the university said students who have assignments to hand in will be given additional time and scheduled exams will be rearranged.

    The library will operate reduced hours, from 10:00 until 20:00.
