    Police have appealed for information to help trace a woman reported missing in the Ochil Hills.

    Alison Fox, 51, from Alloa, went walking in the hills behind Menstrie on Thursday but got lost.

    Mountain rescue teams and local officers have been searching but so far she has not been located.

    Insp Jim Young said: "I must stress that I do not want members of the public to come out and assist with the search due to the weather conditions but if you have any relevant information that can help us establish Alison's whereabouts please contact the ‎police immediately. "

    Alison is described as being white, 5ft 2ins tall with a slim build, short red hair, freckles across her face and thick glasses. She speaks with an English accent and is a keen runner and hillwalker.

    Flights have resumed at Edinburgh Airport.

    In a statement, the airport operator said: "We have flown 31% of our schedule today. We are currently scheduled to have departures up to 20:50 tonight.

    "Our expectation is that airlines will run full schedule tomorrow and we continue to work hard to make that possible. We will be snow clearing throughout.

    "We remind passengers that both easyJet and Ryanair have cancelled operations for today."

    Megan Appleton says she is really grateful for the work farmers near her home, to the north of Dundee, are doing to try to keep roads open.

    She said they have been battling "fierce drifting".

    Rail workers have been checking and clearing lines in Scotland.

    NetworkRail Scotland said entering the Bishopton tunnel on the line to Inverclyde was like "entering another world".

  5. Snow baby: Community helps woman in labourpublished at 13:57 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    The local community in a remote village, cut off by wintry conditions, has worked together to help a pregnant woman who went into labour.

    Roads were blocked to Balgedie near Kinross. Nearby off-duty midwives offered to help and were assisted to the scene by local farmers, after an alert was sent out on social media.

    Emma Niven whose husband Rob was one of the first to get involved with his tractor spoke to the John Beattie radio programme.

    She said: "It's just been the most magical morning. An emergency message went out on Facebook looking for midwives for our neighbour who was in the late stages of labour and was stuck.

    "We just couldn't get her out and nobody could get to her so we got the tractors out and negotiated a couple of midwives and brought them to her just in time at a critical stage where the baby's head was actually stuck.

    "So all has turned out well but oh my goodness what a morning."

    In a post on Facebook, the new mum said: "Wow! I am absolutely blown away by you all! What an incredible community we live in!!! Baby boy is here safe and sound after a terrifying home birth which was only possible thanks to you all!

    "Thank you to our amazing neighbours, friends, midwives, ambulance and police services who walked, dug and ploughed their way to us!! And my clever sister for posting on here! Baby and I are now safely on our way to hospital! Pics, name & weight to follow. Thank you all x x x"

    Flybe has cancelled Friday's flights out of London City Airport, including links with Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

    The airline says other flights in and out of Edinburgh and Glasgow continue to face disruption, and booked passengers should check before going to their departure airport. It has cancelled all aircraft movements today at Cardiff and Dublin.

  9. Power firm staff help gets doctors and nurses to workpublished at 13:29 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    Power company SP Energy Networks has been providing 4x4 vehicles to ferry NHS staff to their work in central and southern Scotland.

    Among them was A&E medic Dr John Mackay, who was taken from his home in Livingston to his night shift at the Forth Valley Hospital in Larbert by SP Energy Networks worker Scott Morrice.

    Engineer Jim Kennedy picked up midwives Frances and Jackie and ferried them to the Pitteuchar Medical Centre in Glenrothes so that they could attend vital clinics.

    Guy Jefferson, SP Energy Networks customer services director, said: "Our staff realise the gravity of the situation and the real difficulty some of our colleagues in the NHS have experienced over the last 72 hours in getting to and from their work.

    "We have a fleet of 4x4 vehicles and engineers who are able to deal with driving in adverse conditions, and we are happy to help communities wherever we can."

    He said the heavy snow had so far not brought any major disruption to the electricity network.

    "Our network in Central Scotland is holding up well despite the heavy snowfall we've seen over past 72 hours. Currently we're operating at 'business as usual' levels, but we will continue to monitor any change in conditions."

  14. Near-miss bus driver says instinct helped her 'glide through' to avoid crashpublished at 12:45 Greenwich Mean Time 2 March 2018

    The Edinburgh bus driver who skillfully swerved to avoid a car in the treacherous weather conditions on Wednesday has been speaking to the BBC.

    Charmaine Laurie told the Victoria Derbyshire programme she didn't have much time to react but managed to steer clear of a Mini which had skidded on the ice.

    She said: "I just tapped the brake but my back end started to slide out so I had to take my foot off the brake and just try and glide it through the space that was there."

    There were about 20 passengers on the bus at the time, including children.

    Footage of the incident was filmed on a dashcam by van driver Gareth Smith.

    Ms Laurie added: "A lot of it was just instinct but we are trained to be aware of these kind of situations.

    Asked how passengers reacted, she said: "No-one really said anything afterwards.

    "But one lady getting off the bus asked me how I was and said 'well done'."

    A yellow weather warning for snow and ice on Sunday into Monday has spread out its reach.

    Earlier forecasts had it confined to more northern and eastern parts but the Met Office has now extended it further south and west.

    Remember, too, there is still an earlier warning in place until Saturday night for snow in many parts.

    There are reports of people struggling to get the essentials like milk and bread as the weather hampers deliveries.

    Pictures have been posted on social media showing empty supermarket and shop shelves.

    One local shop owner in Glasgow has been telling BBC Radio Scotland's John Beattie programme: "We've had no deliveries at all for the last two days. No papers as well.

    "Everyone's been looking for the milk and bread."

    A Tesco delivery driver told the same programme supplies were now beginning to get through.

    "The main roads are clear," he said.

    "We are getting in to most of the stores now and they are replenishing their shelves."

    Highland Council says the A835 Ullapool-Ledmore junction remains closed due to fresh snowfalls and drifting.

    Extra staff are being sent to the area to help the local roads squad to clear the route as far as possible in the conditions they are facing.

    Also in Wester Ross, the C1047 Drumrunie-Achiltibuie is closed and the A832 Gairloch-Dundonell road is affected by drifting snow, particularly at Mungasdale.

    Highland Council said travel in parts of Easter Ross has also been challenging, and gritters have been targeting priority routes in the area.
