Tavish Scott, returned as LibDem MSP for Shetland, says there is a need to rethink how an alternative government can be offered to challenge the SNP.
Hints of realignment? Perhaps although Mr Scott declined to be drawn.
Story of the night so far? SNP victories, Labour defeats, Tory advance. Plus those LibDems victories in the isles. More to come.

One reason why Labour may be left with very little in the way of constiteuncy seats in Scotland at the end of the night is that the party's vote appears to be falling more heavily in seats that it was trying to defend than elsewhere.
So far the party's vote is down on average by by 12 points in the three constituencies declared so far that the party was trying to defend, whereas elsewhere it has been down on average by just 6 points.

In Eastwood the Cons have managed to wrestle this three-way marginal from Labour.
However the increase in the Con vote at two points is nothing like the scale required for the party to gain second place in Scotland.
Meanwhile the seven-point increase in the Con vote is on a scale that suggests they are in contention for second place.
Conservative candidate Jackson Carlaw is congratulated by his opponents
However in Dundee City West, which has also declared, the Con vote is up by just four points and Labour down by just five. If that proves more typical of the rest of Scotland then the Cons will not make second place.
Nevertheless the SNP will be disappointed that the seven-point increase in their share of the vote proved inadequate for them to pick up the seat.
In Greenock and Inverclyde the 14% the swing from Labour to the SNP is on a scale that suggests that the SNP wil pick up the vast bulk of Labour's seats in Scotland, Eastwood aside.

Very good result for Tories in Eastwood - their victory driven by the emerging pattern of Labour decline.
Warmly welcomed by David Mundell, the Scottish Secretary, who said it confirmed that his party was en route for second place and an opportunity, as he put it, to close the sore of independence.
SNP hold East Kilbride
Tavish Scott of the Scottish Lib Dems who has retained his seat in Shetland says it is about time some in the SNP realised people don't like being taken for granted.
In a message to Nicola Sturgeon he said "you don't need dodgy opinion polls to predict if you can win a second independence referendum, you just need to listen to people".
It is an early birthday present today for Mr Scott who turns 50 today.
