  11. Brian Taylor: Rutherglen signals, perhaps, a further Labour calamitypublished at 01:18 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

    Brian Taylor
    BBC Scotland Political Editor

Congratulations to the first MSPs in Orkney and Rutherglen.

That Orkney result is a good victory for Liam McArthur.

Does it signal more than Orcadian effort or can it extrapolate to a limited degree?

The Rutherglen result is very poor for Labour.

They focused on this seat, Kezia Dugdale visited it early, James Kelly is a doughty fighter.

And still the SNP swept it all away. Rutherglen in 2011 signalled an SNP majority.

Tonight it signals, perhaps, a further Labour calamity.

  14. Prof John Curtice says 'Labour will be worried'published at 01:11 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

    Professor John Curtice
    Polling expert

Rutherglen is the first of Labour's seats to fall to the SNP.

Meanwhile Labour will also be worried that the Conservative vote is up by 3.5 points though the Tories will have to do better than this to take second place from Labour.

However if the swing here is replicated in the rest of the territory that Labour is trying to defend the party will lose all of its constituency seats.

  16. Prof Curtice highlights 'ominous sign for Labour' in Orkney resultpublished at 01:05 British Summer Time 6 May 2016

    Professor John Curtice
    Polling expert

The Lib Dems have held Orkney very comfortably indeed securing a 32 point increase in the share of their vote, while the SNP share actually fell back a point.

In an ominous sign for Labour their vote is down by 3 points, leaving them with half of what they had in 2011.

Note that there was a very substantial 25% vote for an independent in this consitituency in 2011 which may help explain the Lib Dem advance.
