- Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser won 26 votes
- Labour MSP Johann Lamont won 26 votes
- Labour MSP Ken Macintosh won 60 votes
- Tory MSP John Scott won 15 votes

Presiding Officer Tricia Marwick announces the result saying 128 MSPs had voted:
- Conservative MSP Murdo Fraser won 23 votes
- Labour MSP Johann Lamont won 23 votes
- Labour MSP Ken Macintosh won 58 votes
- Tory MSP John Scott won 17 votes
- Labour's Elaine Smith won 7 votes
As there was no overall majority Elaine Smith is eliminated and we go again after a short break.
