The Scottish government launched a new £100m strategy to tackle cancer last March.

The new initiative aims to improve prevention, detection, diagnosis, treatment and aftercare for cancer patients in Scotland.

An action plan covering the next five to ten years has been drawn up, including funding for new equipment.

Health Secretary Shona Robison said the strategy was "a blueprint for the future of cancer services in Scotland".

The Beating Cancer: Ambition and Action plan lists more than 50 steps being taken, including £50m towards radiotherapy equipment and support for staff recruitment and training.

Public Health Minister Aileen Campbell welcomes Cancer Research UK to the parliament.

The minister highlights the World Cancer Day unity band she is wearing.

Ms Campbell says we all know someone who has felt the impact of cancer.

She says unity is required to tackle obesity.

Labour MSP Monica Lennon says the parliament must explore what actions can be taken to reduce the prevalence of cancer.

Ms Lennon says that according to Cancer Research UK 40% of cancers are preventable.

She says these include some of the most common breast cancers like bowel and breast cancer.

Ms Lennon gives personal testimony of a cancer scare when she discovered a lump in her breast, but says she was lucky and relieved it was a cyst.

She says she has increased her activity levels.

Conservative MSP Miles Briggs says it is estimated obesity is responsible for 18,100 cancers in the UK.

Mr Briggs says there is also a concern about the lack of awareness of the risks of being obese.

He says it is off real concern that the gap between the least and most deprived is widening in terms of obesity.

Mr Briggs says the government's obesity strategy must be comprehensive

He says proposed cuts to the sport budget will lead to fewer people taking part in sport.

Scotland may need to introduce unpopular policies as part of a bold approach to tackling the country's obesity problem, according to MSPs.

The Health Committee said measures such as restricting cars in towns and increasing parking charges would be politically unpopular.

But they said the policies could also encourage people to be more active.

Almost two thirds (65%) of adults in Scotland were overweight in 2015, including 29% who were obese.

Meanwhile, 28% of children were at risk of becoming overweight, with 15% at risk of obesity.

Labour MSP Colin Smyth says obesity is probably the most pressing public health issue of the day.

Mr Smyth says two thirds of adults in Scotland are overweight and obesity reduces life expectancy by an average of three years.

He says the forthcoming obesity strategy must be bold.

Mr Smyth stresses the importance of early diagnoses and regular screening for cancer.

Green MSP Alison Johnstone again emphasises that obesity is the second biggest preventable cause of cancer and causes 13 cancers.

Ms Johnstone says: "We can change societal behaviour."

She says in the past we were a leaner nation and Scotland's obesity rates are among the highest in the world.

Scottish Labour MSP Anas Sarwar thanks Cancer Research UK  and  all cancer charities for the work that they do.

Mr Sarawr says: "The next big challenge for us is around obesity."

He says the cost to the NHS of obesity is £600m per annum.

Tory MSP Jackson Carlaw says his wife gave him an "old fashioned look" when he told her he would be speaking in a debate on obesity.

Mr Carlaw says people understandably don't like to be lectured by MSPs, like himself, that never meet on the stairs.

He says children's sedentary past times are contributing to the problem of obesity. 

A fifth of children in their first year at primary schools in Scotland are at risk of being overweight or obese, according to statistics released last year..

Researchers found that the proportion of four and five-year-olds who were carrying too much weight had barely changed in a decade.

They also discovered that primary one children in wealthier areas were more likely to be a "healthy weight".

The Scottish government said it was committed to tackling the problem.

The statistics collated by NHS information services agency ISD Scotland were based on height and weight measurements taken from more than 53,000 P1 children across Scotland in 2015/16.

SNP MSP Maree Todd calls on everyone to back the call for a ban for pre-watershed advertising of junk food.

Ms Todd says encouraging people to opt for healthy options and the healthy choice must be made the more affordable one.

Tory MSP Donald Cameron calls on the Scottish government to take bold action in its new diet and obesity strategy to help tackle the problem.

He says tackling obesity will help to "scale down cancer", and notes that MSPs can show their support for World Cancer Day through the wearing of its unity band.
