Conservative MSP Annie Wells says her party thought that a Tory gain in Shettleston was a good chance.

Ms Wells says the Labour vote came to the Conservatives due to the party's opposition to independence.

Lib Dem Katy Gordon says her party are making gains in places like Kirkintilloch and in West Lothian, but Glasgow has been more difficult.

  6. Annan Athletic chairman elected for SNP in Dumfries and Gallowaypublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Willie Johnston
    BBC Scotland correspondent

The three Annandale wards were the first to be counted and declared. In Annandale east, Karen Carruthers of the Conservatives dominated the first preference votes and was the very first councillor to be returned.

Fellow councillor Ronnie Tait was also successful, along with Labour's Archie Dryburgh and independent Craig Peacock. But there was disappointment for long-serving Langholm councillor Dennie Male who was ousted.

The Conservatives also scored a double success in Annandale north with Doug Fairburn and Gail Fairburn both returned comfortably, along with Stephen Thompson of the SNP, and Adam Wilson for Labour.

The pattern continued in Annandale South with Conservative Ian Carruthers joining his wife, Karen, in being re-elected. Also returned was veteran Lib Dem councillor Richard Brodie and Labour's Sean Marshall.

But sitting Labour councillor Ronnie Ogilvie was defeated, with the fourth seat in this ward taken for the SNP by Henry McLelland, the well-known chairman of Annan Athletic football club.

  10. Tory gains in most deprived areas of Scotlandpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Steven Brocklehurst
    BBC Scotland news

    ferguslie park

The Conservatives had just one councillor out of 85 in Glasgow and one out of 43 in Renfrewshire at the 2012 election.

This time around looks like being much more successful after they gained seats in Ferguslie Park in Renfrewshire and Shettleston in the east of Glasgow.

Neither can claim to be traditional Tory territory.

Last year Ferguslie Park in Paisley was identified as the area of Scotland with the greatest level of deprivation.

It was the second successive time the area had been at the bottom of the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation, external (SIMD), which is published every four years.

According to 2013 Scottish government figures, 74% of households in Shettleston were in council tax bands  A-C - the Scottish average was 61%

The average house price was £91,077, below the Scottish average of £162,266.

  18. Curtice: 'SNP advance is at low end of expectations'published at 12:15 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Professor John Curtice
    Polling expert

We now have results from four wards which are comparable with 2012, including one in each Dundee and West Lothian, and the Borders.

On average the Conservative vote was up by 12 points, much as one would anticipate from recent polls in Scotland.

The SNP's advance in contrast is more measured. It's up by between 3 and 6 points in three wards in the Borders and Dundee but has actually fallen back heavily in one ward in West Lothian.

Labour's vote meanwhile is down between 6 and 8 points in the wards that it also fought in 2012.

So far it looks as though the SNP advance is at the low end of expectations and does not point to the party doing as well as it did in the 2015 General Election or the 2016 Holyrood election.

  20. When it comes to votes and seats, the SNP to finish toppublished at 12:11 British Summer Time 5 May 2017

    Brian Taylor
    BBC Scotland Political Editor

.... Let us not forget two other elements - it still appears that the SNP will finish as the largest party in terms of votes and seats. Indeed, their former leader Alex Salmond is forecasting just that, to counter the image of a Conservative advance.

And, secondly, let us not forget the Independent councillors who make up a large element of our local democracy. Orkney and Shetland have already completed their declarations, with the independents to the fore. The Greens took a seat in Orkney and the SNP one in Shetland.
