  1. A night to manage expectationspublished at 01:22 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

How will the parties spin it in Scotland as first result called?

    Philip Sim
    BBC Scotland political reporter

The votes have been cast and counting is under way, and exit polls suggest another turbulent night in Scottish politics.

But some parties might prove easier to please than others. The exit poll. which suggests the SNP could lose 22 seats, has done some weird things to expectation management.

It's a key task in electoral politics. Overegg your prospects and you risk not living up to them; underplay them and you might struggle to get your voters to turn out.

So if you find yourself a bit baffled in the wee hours when a party with three seats looks happier than one with 30, it's because they went into tonight with totally different expectations.

It's well established that the party that wins the most seats wins the election. But be prepared for all kinds of spin from the parties in second, third and fourth place.

Derek Mackay, who co-ordinated the SNP campaign, is saying that it was always going to be tough to replicate 2015.

But he says that a victory is a victory.

The expectation from the outset was that the SNP would win the election in Scotland, but lose ground.

Question right now is: how much ground?

  7. Labour 'quietly confident' in Edinburgh Southpublished at 01:10 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

    Morag Kinniburgh
    BBC Scotland

Labour are "quietly confident" about Edinburgh South, the one Scottish seat they won at the last election.

The SNP tell us they may have held Edinburgh North and Leith.

The SNP's Joanna Cherry says Edinburgh South West has been "a tough fight for us. The Tories have thrown the kitchen sink at this seat but we've worked very hard."

  8. 'Bigger smiles' from the Conservatives in Moraypublished at 01:06 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

    Craig Anderson
    BBC News, Elgin

This is a two-horse race here in Moray - the SNP versus the Conservatives.

On paper this should be an easy seat for the SNP to hold, Angus Robertson their leader in Westminster with a 9,000 majority.

But talking to people, looking round the hall, it's the Conservatives that have the bigger smiles on their faces and the SNP who are looking a lit more worried.

  10. Tory vote holding up in Englandpublished at 01:03 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

    Brian Taylor
    BBC Scotland Political Editor

    More thoughts.

In English seats, particularly in the North-east, the Tory vote is holding up better than the exit poll would suggest.

But how will the UKIP slump play out in core seats in the English Midlands and North-west?

In Scotland, talk is all of tight contests - including in the Western Isles, an SNP stronghold of late.

  13. 'Too close to call' in the Western Islespublished at 00:56 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

    Angus MacDonald
    in Stornoway

In the Western Isles it's turning into a rather interesting contest because last time round Angus MacNeil had a majority of 4,100 over his Labour rival.

This time it's getting quite close and even SNP supporters are saying it's getting too close to call and could be within the hundreds.

This seat has been, since the 1970s, a two-horse race between SNP and Labour and the SNP have held it with Angus Brendan MacNeil since 2005.

This time there are a lot of worried looks from the SNP group. With the bulk of the votes now in and counted, they're saying it could be in the hundreds.

We're still waiting for the ballot boxes from Uist and Barra.

  18. Iain Gray: 'A very good election day' for Scottish Labourpublished at 00:45 British Summer Time 9 June 2017

Labour MSP Iain Gray told BBC Scotland he was hopeful of a good result in East Lothian.

He said: "We have had a very good election day in spite of the torrential rain. We are confident our vote has stayed with us. It has come out in good numbers and we'll have to wait and see if that's enough."

    Iain Gray

"People in East Lothian are telling us they have had enough of the SNP, even many of them who have supported the SNP in recent elections, they are fed up of the idea of another divisive referendum and they believe Nicola Sturgeon should get on with the day job.

"If the exit polls are right, then it's going to be a bad night for NIcola Sturgoen as well as for Theresa May. If we can contribute to that, I'll be very happy indeed."
