Independent MSP Mark McDonald learned he faces being suspended from Holyrood for a month after he was found guilty of sexual harassment.

Mr McDonald resigned as early years minister in November 2017 after he sent an "inappropriate" text message to a woman. He later quit the SNP.

The Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life concluded that the case amounted to sexual harassment.

Holyrood's standards committee has now recommended Mr McDonald be suspended without pay for a month.

The final decision on the sanction will be made by parliament as a whole, and the suspension period will not include the upcoming summer recess.

The government motion as amended by Labour and the Greens is agreed to unanimously.

Ms Constance argues: "We have seen what is possible with the Syrian Resettlement Programme."

31 of our 32 local authorities have recieved refugees thanks to the programme she explains.

The minister says the government will continue to work with COSLA and the Scottish Refugee Council, particularly when it comes to children.

Ms Constance says only 480 children have been transferred to the UK under the Dubs amendment.

A far, far cry from the commitment to support 3,000 children, she states.

I hope the Home Office are indeed listening to the calls to end the two tier asylum process she says, and she hopes it is also are also listening to the calls to reverse their "disgraceful" move away from the Dubs amendment.

In December we reported Scotland had met a target to provide homes for 2,000 Syrian refugees three years ahead of schedule.

The UK government has committed to resettling 20,000 people fleeing the war-torn country through the Syrian Vulnerable Person Resettlement Programme.

Local authorities north of the border agreed to take in 10% of that number.

But the council body Cosla said that goal had been reached just two years into the five-year scheme.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "Scotland is an open and welcoming country and today's celebration,welcoming the 2,000th Syrian refugee to our country, is testament to that.

Communities Secretary Angela Constance highlights praise for the New Scots strategy from the UN.

We should be both supporting other countries with problems which cause people to flee and welcome those coming to our borders, she asserts.

The Scottish government supports calls to limit immigration detention to 28 days and also to move to community based programmes, confirms Ms Constance.

Tory MSP Jamie Greene accepts the system has not got it right all the time hence the need for these debates.

The Tory MSP argues the Schengen area is a shadow of its former self in accepting refugees.

He says the programmes and schemes cost money and the people working in them deserve praise and he says that is what the Tory amendment says.

Mr Greene states no amount of political point scoring will address the many complex reasons for the international refugee crisis.

Tory MSP Jamie Greene points to positive work on providing housing, education and language support for refugees.

He welcomes the meeting of the Syrian refugee resettlement target.

The UK is the world's second largest donor of bilateral aid, states Mr Greene.

Labour MSP Pauline McNeill explains the Refugee Council points out that some of the poorest children in our country are refugees or asylum seekers.

Ms McNeill calls for additional resources from the Scottish government to address this.

MSPs should have the right for an annual visit to Dungavel to see the conditions there, says Ms McNeill.

She calls on Scottish Secretary David Mundell to make this happen.

Doctors who have travelled to Scotland as refugees are being given the chance to start working for the NHS through a training scheme. The BBC's Victoria Derbyshire programme has been to meet those involved.

"When people say, 'I had a couple of beers', they don't mean two," jokes instructor Dr Patrick Grant, a retired A&E doctor training refugees to work for NHS Scotland - including in how to overcome cultural barriers.

One of his students is Fatema, who previously worked as a surgeon in the Middle East until she was forced to flee.

Having treated anti-government protesters in her home country, she herself had become a government target.

Labour MSP Pauline McNeill tells the chamber of how two years ago she enjoyed Christmas dinner with a Syrian family.

They arrived with presents for the children and it was one of the best Christmases we had, she says.

The children of the family were scared of her dogs because they were so used to seeing dogs attack people, Ms McNeill states.

Scotland and Britain must be a shining example to show how refugees should be treated, the Labour MSP argues.

It is quite easy to understand why refugees are coming to Europe, she states.

A Christian man who has spent six years seeking asylum has appealed to the prime minister to allow him and his family to stay in the UK.

Maqsood Bakhsh fled Pakistan in 2012 with his wife and two sons after Islamic extremists threatened to kill him because of his religious beliefs.

They now live in Glasgow and fear their lives would be in danger if they returned to Pakistan.

The Home Office said every asylum case was assessed on its individual merits.

Mr Greer says the Home Office are seriously considering deporting 10-year-old Giorgi Katkava, as Bob Doris highlighted.

The Green MSP also highlights the plight of the Bakhsh family in Glasgow.

I'm proud that this parliament will join with thousands of communities today, standing not just for but with refugees, he says.

Mr Greer says at a time when darkness appears to be falling over Europe "we will today insist on keeping a light that they cannot keep out".

"Today I am very proud to say I am a member of this parliament."

US President Donald Trump has bowed to public pressure and signed an executive order promising to "keep families together" in migrant detentions.

Mr Trump reversed his own policy amid international fury over the separation of undocumented parents and children.

He said he had been swayed by images of children who have been taken from parents while they are jailed and prosecuted for illegal border-crossing.

But the order does not address families already separated by the policy.

An audio recording in which migrant children in the US can be heard crying for their parents has been released as US President Donald Trump remains defiant over his immigration policy.

Some 2,000 migrant children have been separated from their parents in the past few months after their families tried to cross the US border illegally.

Mr Trump said he would not allow the US to become a "migrant camp".

The UN high commissioner for refugees says the policy is "unacceptable".

Green MSP Ross Greer says he is disappointed that so many Western nations have turned their backs on refugees.

There has been a marked increase in hostile policies and dehumanising language across the continent, he states.

He heavily criticises the US government's treatment of migrants, particularly of children.

We should stand in solidarity with those resisting these actions, Mr Greer states.

He tells the chamber that many churches have had to turn their work underground due to pressure from the US government.

The Green MSP speaks emotionally about the stories of refugees he has met or visited the graves of.

A 10-year-old boy who has lived in Glasgow since he was three faces being deported to Georgia after being left an orphan.

Giorgi Kakava moved to Scotland with his mother Sophie when his father was killed by Georgian criminals.

Ms Baikhadze died in February after suffering a long illness.

Now Giorgi's grandmother Katie Baikhadze, who he lives with in Springburn, is fighting for him to be given asylum.

In April we reported that he UK has accepted more than 10,000 Syrian refugees in the past two and a half years - but analysis by the BBC shows large disparities in the numbers going to different parts of the country.

Scotland has taken four times as many Syrian refugees as Greater London, while Northern Ireland has taken over 300 more than the whole of the east of England.

Relative to their populations, northern England has taken over twice as many Syrian refugees as the South.

Overall, almost a third of local authorities are yet to take any Syrian refugees.

The BBC analysis looks at the Home Office's, external breakdown of local authority intake of Syrian refugees and weighs this against the population size.
