Labour MSP Mary Fee asks if the professor has looked at all the studies from academics who do not agree with him about the smacking ban bill.

Prof Lazelere indicates that he has done so and he goes on to say he has not done a study into discipline of children with disabilities, but warns against a blanket ban of smacking.

SNP MSP Gail Ross says this bill will just give children the same protection as adults in the eyes of the law.

The academic from reiterates his view that smacking can help reinforce time outs for children.

He says a paediatrician asked is smacking could be used with a child who was biting electrical wires.

Prof Lazelere says he would not want a complete ban but it should be discouraged up to the age of 2 years old.

  3. Men's Sheds is 'unsung success story'published at 13:38 Greenwich Mean Time 21 March 2019

    Liam McArthur

Liam McArthur for the Lib Dems says the movement is an "unsung success story."

He says he also seems to always win raffle prizes when he visits events run by sheds in his constituency.

"For every £1 spend on a Men's Shed, there is a return of £9," he says, in terms of health and social care spend.

There needs to be a greater value placed on the benefits of sheds, he says, and planning costs are too high for them.

For some men, retirement is a long-awaited chance to travel the world, hit the golf course, or take up a new hobby. For others, after decades in work, it can be a time of loneliness and isolation.

But across Scotland, a new movement is helping growing numbers of men improve their health and their mood.

Men's Sheds have been set up across the country to enable men to come together to pursue practical interests like wood-turning and metalwork.

Age Scotland said it was in contact with 101 sheds, ranging from established projects to new initiatives and some linked to other organisations.

This is Dalbeattie Men's Shed, where local men in their 50s, 60s and 70s meet twice a week to "plooter about in workshops".

Using wood, plastic or metal, they can turn their hands to just about anything, from clocks and pens to bookcases and tables.

Since then its numbers have swelled to more than 50 and its success has been recognised on a national scale - it was named Men's Shed of the Year 2017.

Men's Sheds motionImage source, Scottish Parliament

SNP MSP Christine Grahame would like to draw attention to the Men's Sheds movement, and how it helps people's wellbeing.

She says the Borders has 10% of Scotland's Men's Sheds, and 19% of its members.

Men aren't as good at sharing their problems, she tells the chamber, and so sheds are a good place to go and share concerns.

The movement gives men a chance to build something for themselves, she adds, and the benefits of keeping active are there to see.
