    Steelworkers' union Community said it understands the incident was in the bar and rod mill on the site, not the actual plant.

    A spokesman added: "We are extremely concerned by reports of an explosion at the Celsa steel works in Cardiff. 

    "Our immediate thoughts are with the individuals affected and their families.

    "A member of our regional team is on his way to the site now to see what assistance we can offer and to seek further clarity on what has happened."

    "I'm obviously deeply concerned to hear of the serious incident at Celsa steel in my constituency this morning. This news comes as a huge shock to the local community. 

    "I have spoken to senior management at the plant and clearly the situation is ongoing, with a number of reports of injuries. 

    "My thoughts are of course with the workers caught up in this incident and their families; and the emergency services responding at the scene. 

    Mr Doughty said he visited the site a fortnight ago. 

    "I have raised the matter with the Secretary of State for Wales this morning in the House of Commons and he has assured me that the authorities will do all they can to support the immediate operations and also any investigation."

    Other patients urged to think before attending hospital

    Non-emergency patients at Cardiff's University of Wales Hospital are being told there will be a delay as priority is given to those injured in the explosion.

    Alice Casey, chief operating officer for Cardiff and Vale University Hospital, said: "We have implemented our protocols for supporting major incidents and our teams are preparing to treat those injured.

    "We would ask the public to think carefully if they need to attend the unit and to make use of other health services."
