  7. Is there fatigue over war in Ukraine?published at 21:12 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

The final question regards fatigue setting in, as shown by the resistance in the US to further funding for Ukraine.

Trudeau says he understands it is a time of many global challenges – the impact of climate change, extreme weather events, the hangover from the pandemic and the direct impact on food and energy prices linked to Russia's invasion – and people are having a hard time.

But, he says, the destabilisation if Russia succeeded in overthrowing rules-based order would have a profound economic impact, so it is not only in Ukraine's interest that Canada supports it, but in Canada's too.

The Central Bank of Russia has billions of assists, and Trudeau says he is looking at using that money to support Ukraine.

Zelensky says it's his belief that one supports either Ukraine or Russia, there are no mediators in this war.

"By weakening the support of Ukraine, you enforce Russia. what can you expect of a more powerful Russia? The history books can give you the answer," he says.

Wrapping up, he once again thanks Canada for its support and the pair exit the stage.

  8. Zelensky says an election in Ukraine would bring 'complicated security issues'published at 21:04 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

The two leaders are then asked how sanctions can be strengthened and whether there is any pressure on the need for Ukraine to have an election.

Trudeau responds that Canada has "sanctioned 2,700 people and entities and will continue too... we are constantly working to co-ordinate with our allies."

He adds that Canada is working to highlight that Russia is responsible for food and energy crisis going on around the world.

Meanwhile, Zelensky says Canada not pressing for an election, adding that he can "raise the issue but not press".

He goes on to say that the pair have "a warm relationship".

Explaining more about why an election would mean “very complicated security issues” as it would be a struggle to work out how to give people in occupied territories the chance to vote.

He also say that millions of Ukrainians are abroad and as for funding, “society is against that cause we are at war, this topic is raised so we need to be ready.

Lastly, Zelensky says the largest complication is the military as “we have a million soldiers in the trenches - how can they vote? Russia would open fire on people going to vote”.

  9. Will Ukraine get long-range missile systems?published at 20:52 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

The second question comes from a Canadian CTV journalist who asks both if US President Joe Biden promised to provide Ukraine with long-range missiles and how concerned the two leaders are about divisions in US Congress and divisions Nato allies such as Poland.

Zelensky answers: "We are grateful to the US and with all due respect to all of our allies the US has provided the largest share of assistance.

"We are discussing all types of weapons. I believe the majority of what was discussed will reach [Ukraine]."

He claims there are Russians spreading disinformation to influence politicians as he notes the influence in African and Latin American countries.

Trudeau then says Canada has been very active in supporting Ukraine financially, economically and in humanitarian aid.

"Canada is one of the most interconnected countries," Trudeau says as he lists off Nato, the Commonwealth and UN.

"We have been unequivocal in standing up for Ukraine and others stand alongside us."

Trudeau adds the war matters to people around the world due to food prices and instability in eastern Europe.

  10. Pair asked about security guaranteespublished at 20:49 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

Trudeau speaks at a lecternImage source, Reuters

    It's question time.

The first asks what security guarantees Canada will provide Ukraine and what expectations there are regarding how Canada will support the peace formula.

Trudeau says Canada is providing multi-year support, that Canada will stand by Ukraine for as long as it takes.

He says this is not just because of the long-standing friendship between the two countries, but because it’s the right thing to do.

On the peace process, Trudeau says he is looking at how Canada can provide support around displaced persons and child abductions.

Zelensky says the security guarantee is a strong bilateral document, and there is separate one for each country. We are taking about strong protection in the air and at sea, he says, as well as protecting energy and infrastructure.

On the peace formula, he says the most important task is to stay focused, and that he is working on getting as many countries involved in the process as possible.

"We will need to clean our territory from the mines," he says.

"Together with the Canadian support we will be fulfilling these tasks."

"When we are victorious, it will be a common victory with Canada and all our friends, the whole free world," he adds.

More from Trudeau who continues to switch between French and English.

The Canadian PM says he is making mental health support available as he notes the effects of war are taking an understated toll.

"It will not be possible to rebuild without peace," he says.

"As I said in parliament and UN Security Council, this peace must not be a false peace based on compromises which benefit the aggressor."

Trudeau adds he wants to see "territorial integrity" restored to Ukraine.
