Canada's House Speaker Anthony Rota said Zelensky's words reminded him of another world leader who addressed both Canadian Houses of Parliament during war time: Sir Winston Churchill.

Rota says Churchill too delivered an impassioned speech on behalf of his people.

Canada boasts a vast population of Ukrainians, making this visit to Ottawa incredibly important, Professor Jennifer Welsh, the director at Center of International Peace and Security Studies says.

Speaking to the BBC News Channel, she says the diaspora, which is the second-biggest in the world, and Canada's place in Nato makes it key in Zelensky's mission of shoring up ongoing support.

There is no question that in the modern era, the clock ticks quickly, Welsh says, adding "Zelensky is rightly worried about what 2024 might bring", particularly in the US which is lending the most support.

Countries currently supporting Ukraine need to remember the counter-offensive cannot be won overnight, she says, and "today's events in Crimea demonstrates what Ukraine is capable of".
