The Ukrainecast team of Lucy Hockings and Vitaly Shevchenko have just recorded their latest episode, and have been joined by our correspondent in Kyiv Orla Guerin to talk about the missile strike on Russia's Black Sea fleet headquarters earlier today.

While details are still filtering in, the team agrees that it's a major symbolic win for Kyiv.

“Ukraine has managed to strike right at the heart of Russian infrastructure in Crimea”, Guerin says, “and combined with recent strikes in Russia as well, it furthers the message Kyiv wants to send to Russia that it is vulnerable, too.

“It's not yet clear what the impact on operations will be”, Guerin continues, “given the immediate threat is the Russian ships themselves and the missiles they carry, but the symbolic damage is very clear.”

You can listen to the full discussion on Ukrainecast on BBC Sounds from 1930BST.

  15. Missiles 'likely' made in UK or Ukrainepublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

    Chris Partridge
    BBC News weapons analyst

The missile strike on the Black Sea Fleet HQ points to a now familiar pattern of attack on Russian military assets in occupied Crimea.

One likely contender is the UK-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missile, launched from Ukrainian Su-24 “Fencer” swing-wing ground attack aircraft.

These missiles have a stated range of more than 150 miles (241km) and are equipped with either a blast or a penetrating warhead – the latter being more suitable for this sort of strike. Reports of a large hole in the building point towards this.

The other contender is the Ukrainian-developed R-360 Neptune. Originally designed as an anti-ship weapon, it has been comprehensively modified and improved for ground attack scenarios.

Last April, during the early weeks of the war, the missile was used to attack and sink the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, the Moskva. Russia claimed the ship sank in a storm after a fire.

More recently, Neptune was credited to have been used to destroy one of Russia’s most advanced surface-to-air missile systems – the S-400 – in Crimea, dealing a blow to Moscow’s air defence capabilities in the region.

Russia tries to portray Crimea as a fortresspublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 22 September 2023

    James Waterhouse
    Ukraine correspondent in Kyiv

It appears Ukraine is continuing to target the occupied Crimean Peninsula with missile and drone strikes.

Last week, a Russian military base was hit, and a submarine and a warship destroyed. Russia tries to portray Crimea as a fortress.

Kyiv – which hasn’t acknowledged responsibility for this latest attack – is also trying to cut off Russian supply lines as it continues with its counteroffensive further north.

Ukraine, meanwhile, says Russia has started a new phase of what it calls “energy terror” ahead of winter.

But Kyiv says the country is better prepared than last year - when Russia targeted energy infrastructure with missile strikes.
