    Le Monde reports the French interior ministry has said that 118 police searches took place last night, with 25 people taken into custody and 34 arms seized - although it is not clear whether that figure includes the raid at St Denis.

    The newspaper says that over the past three nights there have been 414 raids, 60 people taken into custody and 75 weapons seized, as well as 118 people put under house arrest.

    A St Denis resident describes the raid

    The AFP news agency has spoken to a St Denis resident who lives 150m away from the apartment which was raided earlier. She described the scene as like "something out of a film".

    Speaking from an evacuation centre where counselling has been made available to residents, she said: "The explosions sounded like they were happening in the kitchen or next door". 

    "The helicopter lit up my living room. I was distressed, shocked. I had to talk to someone... I came out when they said it was over," she added, holding her young son by the hand. 

  5. Saint Denis cell were 'about to carry out fresh attacks'published at 14:38

    French private radio station RTL has cited a police source as saying that the network targeted in Saint-Denis was about to carry out new attacks as early as Thursday in Paris' La Defense business district. 

    The station's website also says that the woman who blew herself up during the police's assault on the Saint-Denis apartment made a phone call just before setting off her explosive vest. 

    This "could suggest a potential contact with accomplices," RTL claims.

  9. Cancelling Germany match 'the right thing'published at 14:10

    Angela Merkel, Germany's chancellor, has apologised to football fans after the Germany versus Holland match was abruptly called off an hour before kick-off last night. She praised them for their conduct at the stadium in Hannover.

    Thousands of spectators had already arrived and entered the stadium when the evacuation was ordered. Security forces had received intelligence of a planned terrorist attack involving explosives.

    So-called Islamic State could be defeated militarily in months, perhaps even weeks, if western countries "fully engage" in the fight against them, the head of security for the Kurdish KDP Peshmerga forces has told the BBC.

    Once they lose territory, they are likely to become less attractive to militants, he adds. Military defeat would be the beginning of the "total defeat", he adds.

    Col Richard Kemp, the former head of the international terrorism team at the UK's Joint Intelligence Committee, tells BBC News events in and around Paris over the past few days underline "the real seriousness of the problem that France faces".

    President Hollande was right to say the country was at war, he adds, and the conflict needs to be "fought like a war".

    Talking about actions in Syria and Iraq, he says Western countries will not be able to defeat so-called Islamic State from the air alone - ground action will be needed too. 

    And he adds that France and its allies need to destroy IS or accept they will become a world power for years to come.

  14. Bomb scare at Copenhagen airport 'over'published at 13:40

    AP reports that Danish police have called off a bomb scare at Copenhagen's international airport that prompted an hour-long evacuation of hundreds of passengers. 

    Police said on Twitter that "an overheard conversation about a bomb'' sparked the evacuation. Commuter train and subway lines to the airport also were briefly halted. 

    The airport said Terminal 3 was reopened but check-ins had been moved to Terminal 2 and delays were to be expected.

    French police are looking for "radicalised individuals" at Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, according to Le Monde newspaper, BBC Monitoring reports. The airport police say the searches are "not directly linked" to the Paris attacks, but "do concern individuals having shown signs of radicalisation".

    British Prime Minister David Cameron has insisted the question of how to dismantle Islamic State (IS) bases in Syria "cannot be dodged forever" as he pushed for Britain to join airstrikes. 

    The prime minister reiterated his determination to stage another Commons vote on extending RAF strikes from Iraq to Syria as he debated the issue with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn at Prime Minister Questions at the house of commons in London. 

     "We cannot dodge forever the question of how to degrade Is both in Iraq and in Syria," he said. 

    Mr Cameron also dismissed suggestions that the UK should only take military action if there was a UN security council resolution, saying he would not "outsource to Russian veto the decisions that we need to keep our country safe".. 

  20. Copenhagen airport 'is evacuated'published at 13:01

    The main terminal at Copenhagen's international airport, the Nordic region's main hub, has been evacuated because of "a suspicious bag'', officials quoted by the AP news agency says. 

    Airport spokeswoman Sisse Roland Hansen says the terminal and airport metro station have been shut, and flights moved to other terminals, with no timescale for reopening.
