    Alcohol misuse in Guernsey costs every taxpayer about £500 a year, according to a new report by university student Ben Green into the economic and social costs of alcohol abuse.

    The report, funded by Mourant Ozannes, examined the cost of alcohol abuse to States departments, the fire service, police, coastguard and other agencies.

    The report makes a number of recommendations including a higher minimum price for alcohol.

    The first sitting of the States of Jersey to be filmed, streamed and made available online will be the sitting on Monday 26 September.

    Approved in 2015 there will be five cameras in the States chamber with the live broadcast available for six months after each sitting.

    Deputy Sam Mezec, who recently reviewed a test filming said "it will let the public hold politicians to account more than ever before".

    A review into the cost of alcohol abuse in Guernsey has made a number of recommendations, including a higher minimum price per unit and better education.

    The report by student Ben Green, involved a number of departments and also called for better data collection and a bigger budget for the island's alcohol service to allow them to better address the causes.

    A new unit to represent Jersey's interests following the UK's decision to leave the European Union is being set up by the States.

    It will cost about £1.7m and is one of three projects given funding by the treasury department to stimulate economic growth.

    More than £320,000 went to a project looking at data protection regulation and £107,000 will be used to develop on-island digital businesses.

    An auction of pieces owned by Jersey collector David Gainsborough Roberts at Christies Auction House raised nearly £400,000.

    This included a slice of Queen Victoria's wedding cake that sold for £1,500, a pair of the monarch's knickers and keys from the Titanic.

    Mr Roberts, who is now in his 70s, spent his life collecting rare gems and previously said he does not have children to pass them on to so hoped to use the money raised from selling them to help people.

    A new report examining the cost and impact of alcohol misuse found it cost Guernsey between £18m and £20m per year.

    It made a number of recommendations including increasing the minimum price of alcohol and better education.

    Some of the best racing car drivers in the islands are taking on various courses in Alderney as part of a Guernsey Car and Motor Club event.

    Drivers will be doing sprints and hill climbs at various locations around the island. 

    Club President Karl Marshall said the event was a big economic plus for the island's tourist industry.

    The final cost of the recent senatorial by-election in Jersey will not be known until February 2017.

    Some costs are already known including £8,500 for the website, design and social media, £11,500 for leaflets and manifestos and £12,000 for filming rights.

    The cost of printing, hired services, polling station hire, travel expenses, postage, advertising and other expenses have yet to be finalised.

    Jersey Police have paid out about £50 in parking fines in Jersey and the UK with the education department paying out another £90 so far in 2016, a freedom of information request has revealed, external.

    Government departments spent a total of £142.50 so far this year, £330 in 2015 and £400 in 2014.

    An agreement between the financial services commission in Guernsey and the Abu Dhabi Global Market finance regulator will improve regulatory practice in both areas, according to the Guernsey regulator.

    William Mason, director of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission said: "It represents a further demonstration of Guernsey's commitment to working with overseas regulatory authorities".

    He said it showed the island was doing its part in addressing matters of global interest and concern in the area of financial services regulation.

    A number of parking spaces in St Peter Port are being converted into disabled spaces and small vehicle bays. 

    From the 2 October disabled bays will be available at La Vallette, Belmont Road, Rouge Huis Avenue, and at the Rougeval Estate. 

    A width restriction of 1.83m is also being introduced in the two-hour bays in Cornet Street, just below the Terrace Cafe, and in Belmont Road.

    A new unit within Jersey's government, tasked with understanding and dealing with issues arising from Brexit, has been established.

    Treasury Minister, Senator Alan Maclean, allocated £1.75m to set up the new group that will be part of the Ministry of External Relations. 

    A spokesman said: "The team will establish and co-ordinate a high-level working group across all States departments to assess potential implications for Jersey and to determine the Island’s cross-cutting interests in Brexit negotiations."

    Channel Island retail group Sandpiper have acquired the Costcutter franchise licence for the islands.

    The deal is subject to regulatory approval and would see the company take over the 16 stores by the end of November if approved.

    The company already holds the franchise licence for Iceland, Marks and Spencer, Costa Coffee, George and a number of other UK brands. The company said there would be no redundancies and existing staff would be transferred with the same terms and conditions.

    Police are searching for a group of "youths" suspected of starting three small fires in a barn filled with hay on Tuesday.

    Officers were called after the youths were heard in the abandoned property in Rue Des Gron, St Saviour, Guernsey at about 17:40.

    They were not seen leaving but were believed to be on skateboards.
