    The future look and development of the St Helier waterfront will be reviewed with a new plan to be published, the environment minister has announced.

    Deputy Steve Luce will consult with ministers and may commission an independent expert to draw up future planning guidelines for the area.

    He said: “The regeneration of St Helier is a strategic priority for the Council of Ministers. It is another crucial step in the work we’re doing to plan for, invest in and rejuvenate our town to provide good quality homes and open spaces, while protecting the coast and countryside from development.”

    Young people at a respite centre will have new entertainment and education equipment following a £60,000 donation from the Freemasons of Jersey.

    The Oakwell Children's Respite Centre offers short breaks to families of children with mobility problems and learning difficulties.  

    The donation will allow them to invest in new technology to help the children they care for.

    Nominations have opened in the Vale by-election for the seat in the States of Guernsey left vacant by the death of Deputy Dave Jones.

    Deputy Jones, who represented the Vale parish for 16 years including 12 as Housing Minister, died in July after a long illness.

    The nomination period runs from 09:00 today until 16:00 on Friday, 23 September, with the by-election due to be held on 19 October.

    The last by-election to be held in Guernsey was in December 2015 when Deputy Charles Parkinson was elected in the St Peter Port North district following the death of Deputy Martin Storey.

    Mental health organisations in Jersey have welcomed new laws to help people with conditions such as dementia. 

    The States approved laws which protect people who are not able to make their own decisions about important matters including people with Alzheimer's or dementia.

    Mark Blamey, who manages the Jersey Alzheimer's Association, said: "We want the law to protect those people and enable those people to make decisions for themselves as long as possible."

    A Jersey environmentalist has defended the States poor record on protecting the environment.

    Cassie Horton spoke out after a report by the Department of the Environment showed it had made little progress over the past five years.

    She said: "To be fair to the department they are probably doing the best they can. It comes down to money, whether there are funds to do stuff, but at the end of the day it is us, the way we live our lives."

    A former EU banker has been tasked with advising Guernsey's government on the island's financial stability. 

    Peter Sedgwick will work at least 30 days per year for three years and will be paid £40,000 per year.

    Minister for External Affairs Jonathan Le Tocq says that represents value for money as there is nothing more important for Guernsey at the moment than financial stability, and the role is required by international bodies.

    The charity Autism Jersey has revealed plans for a new centre for people with the condition.

    Known as "the hub", it will cost about £1m which will include the development of sensory rooms and a modern, calm place for families. 

    Nick Winsor, from the charity, said Autism Jersey needs to move as it has outgrown its current space.
