    Jersey Heritage are looking for one of the Fort Regent cable cars for a new exhibition called Bergerac's Island.

    The exhibition, to run in 2017, will explore life in Jersey in the 1980s. Jersey Heritage want one to represent a trip to Fort Regent in a display.

    A spokeswoman said they would prefer a red one but are having difficulty finding any at all, so any colour was welcome.

    Queen Victoria's knickers have been sold by a well known Jersey collector for £16,250 at auction.

    David Gainsborough Roberts, who is in his 70s, has spent his life collecting rare gems, including Marilyn Monroe's bra and paintings by Winston Churchill.

    A slice of cake from Queen Victoria's wedding in 1840, and keys from the Titanic, were among Mr Roberts' rare gems sold at Christie's Auction House in London on Wednesday.

    The man set to run Guernsey's financial stability advisory committee described the island as having an "excellent reputation for stability".

    Setting up the committee was based on a recommendation from the international monetary fund.

    Peter Sedgwick, who has worked with HM treasury, the EU investment bank and is currently chairman of leading bowel cancer research charity Bowel Cancer UK, said the first task was to review Guernsey's current position in detail.

    Cassie Horton, from Action for Wildlife, was speaking as a government report showed the States had made little progress in protecting species and natural habitat in the past five years. 

    She said we all have to take responsibility for the quality of our natural environment. She said: "Anything and everything in the island from birds to bats, our lifestyle is impacting on it."

    A major pedestrian link between King Street and the Waterfront in Jersey is to be made safer with wider pavements according to the infrastructure minister.

    A recent survey found about 1,500 people were using the western side pavement in an average lunch hour with another 500 using the eastern side.

    Work will start early in 2017 to widen the pavement by at least 80cm which Deputy Eddie Noel said would improve pedestrian safety.

    A slice of Queen Victoria's wedding cake dating from the 19th Century has fetched £1,500 at auction.

    The cake, which has survived from Queen Victoria's wedding to Prince Albert in 1840, was sold by the well-known Jersey collector David Gainsborough Roberts. 

    The monarch's knickers, keys from the Titanic and Winston Churchill's hat also sold from his collection at Christie's in London on Wednesday.

    Alderney politicians are being urged to consult with the public over plans that would see an electricity cable - linking France and Britain - coming ashore in the island.

    The France Alderney Britain Link (FAB) is an Alderney Renewable Energy project co-financed by the European Union allowing the island to sell tidal power to France and the UK.

    At a States meeting islanders urged politicians to hold independent inquiries, public meetings and a referendum before the project continues.

    A review of the master plan for the Jersey waterfront will start in the autumn and will look at the existing objectives to see if they are still relevant.

    They were:

    • Integrate the old town with the waterfront and address the separation presently caused by the road
    • Create a distinctive mixed use quarter in St Helier, which makes a step change in design and appearance
    • Create a new office quarter to serve the financial services industry
    • Provide new homes for local residents
    • Create new areas of public space that provide a real sense of place for residents and visitors to enjoy
    • Create new opportunities to broaden the offer within the tourism and visitor sector, providing a new hotel and self-catering accommodation

    Environment Minister Deputy Steve Luce said St Helier was one of the main strategic priorities for the States.

    Jersey's environment minister says more conservation work is needed to slow down or reverse species decline. 

    Concerns were raised in yesterday's national State of Nature report - which also included the Channel Islands.

    Deputy Steve Luce said there was evidence active conservation management and change of practice could make a significant difference.

    He said: “Time is running out, but if we continue to build on important long-term work, we can make a difference locally and meet the States strategic priority of protecting and enhancing our natural environment for future generations."

  19. Vale by-election: Voter registration to be open after nominations in 'break with tradition'published at 10:39 British Summer Time 15 September 2016

    In a break with tradition in Guernsey, islanders will be allowed to register to vote after the nomination period has closed.

    For example for the general election in April nominations closed on 31 March, while voters had to be registered by the 24 February.

    Ahead of that election and previous ones, some islanders said they saw little point in signing up to vote without knowing who the candidates were.

    The registration process for residents of the Vale will remain open until 15 October with the by-election on 19 October.

    At April's election 3,774 (74%) of the registered voters in the Vale turned out.
