Anyone who hits a cat while driving in Jersey will have to report it to the island's animal shelter in future.

The minister responsible for roads has stopped short of giving cats the same protection as dogs, but said it would help prevent unnecessary suffering.

Deputy Eddie Noel said he didn't want to add an extra burden on to animal owners - because if cats were to be treated the same as dogs, then owners would have to keep them under far more control.
