    A new managing director for Jersey's General Hospital has been chosen to replace the current post-holder, Helen O'Shea, when she leaves in February.

    Robert Sainsbury will take over the role having been the chief operating officer of a Clinical Commissioning Group covering a population of 1.1 million people since 2014 and both a senior nurse and ward manager.

    The managing director has responsibility for all that happens at the General Hospital, as well as the States of Jersey Ambulance Service.

    Julie Garbutt, chief executive for Health and Social Services, said: "We are delighted to have attracted and secured a candidate of Rob's calibre to this essential post.

    "Rob joins us to take us on the next stage of this journey, at a time when we are continuing to change and improve health and social care services in Jersey to ensure they are the best they can be for islanders."

    A belgian tug boat carrying a heavy lift barge is expected in St Helier later today, as specialists gather to retrieve a 20m (66ft) yacht submerged at the bottom of St Aubin's Bay.

    The Antwerp vessel is needed along with a 20-man professional team to bring up the boat submerged off Portelet.

    The vessel is expected to head out and set anchor on Tuesday, with the lift expected to commence on Wednesday.

    During the operation maritime and drone exclusion zones will be in force in the area.

    A new group has been set up to make sure arts and culture are accessible and at the forefront of Guernsey life.

    The Arts Strategy Working Group is a joint venture between the Guernsey Community Foundation and the Arts Commission, and has been set up in response to recent concerns over the funding of arts.

    The plan is to develop a strategy that will detail a long term, sustainable funding plan and look at the way arts and culture is promoted and developed on the island.

    Parents in Jersey could be entitled to a whole year of leave when they have children, if the States follow recommendations from the Employment Forum., external

    The non-political organisation was asked by the social security minister to review the laws governing maternity and paternity leave.

    At the moment, women are allowed as little as two weeks paid leave and six weeks unpaid.

    But the forum says that by 2019 it wants new mums and dads to have 52 weeks off, with six of them paid.

    A nuisance gull's fate hangs in the balance after Jersey's environment department failed to come to a decision on what to do with the problem bird.

    Gulliver, as the bird has become known, has been the focus of more than 20 complaints after dive-bombing beachgoers.

    Following a petition signed by more than 700 people to save the , externalgull and intervention from naturalist Chris Packham, Environment Minister Deputy Eddie Noel confirmed this morning that he would not allow the bird to be killed.

    Efforts to salvage a 20m (66ft) yacht submerged at the bottom of Jersey's St Aubin's Bay will begin tomorrow.

    A favourable weather forecast mean a 20-man professional team including 14 divers, salvage, barge and dive masters can commence their work, Ports of Jersey says.

    It sank after hitting a buoy earlier this month, with two men rescued by Jersey Fire and Rescue Service's inshore rescue boat responding to a mayday call out.

    The boat is completely submerged off Portelet at a depth of about 20m (66ft).

    We can't say with any certainty this is Gulliver, the seagull which is at the centre of a storm in Jersey, but this bird certainly displays many of the attributes described by others.

    Chris De George sent us this recent footage from the Barge Aground area of St Ouen beach.

    He said he and his wife have been pestered several times in roughly the same place on the beach by what appeared to be the same seagull.

    "I can only assume it is the same bird. On that particular day I spoke to several other dog walkers who all said they had seen it."

    "I actually walk my dog on a different part of the beach now in order to avoid it."

    A new scheme aims to tackle Guernsey's shortage of teachers.

    From 2018, graduates will be able to use the "earn as you learn" course to train in primary and secondary school teaching, all while earning a wage.

    The course, headed by Education Services in conjunction with the University of Brighton, starts in September and runs for one year, leading to qualified teacher status in Guernsey upon completion.

    Helen Grand, deputy director of the department, said: "The programme not only helps fill Guernsey's shortfall of teachers, but it provides the opportunity for more mature students to consider a career in the profession".

    A bride had to abandon her wedding photo shoot because of a seagull believed to be at the centre of a row between the island's government and a prominent wildlife presenter.

    It dive bombed her, grabbing at her veil, while her husband tried to drive it off.

    Charlie Watkins and her new husband went to L'Etacq in St Ouen's Bay for some romantic pictures by the sea in September.

    But not long into the shoot she heard a squawking from behind her and the seagull swooped down onto her veil.

    Her husband batted the bird away but they were forced to abandon the shoot and come back later that evening.

    The Norman market on Jersey's weighbridge will be closing earlier than expected, because the traders are running out of stock.

    After its opening was delayed because of cancelled ferries, the market was due to stay open until midday on Wednesday.

    Despite this setback, a spokesman for the Maison de Normandie says the traders have done so well that they will run out of stock by Tuesday evening, when it will close.

    Several bottles of alcohol have been stolen from a garden shed in St Saviour, Guernsey, police have said.

    Officers think the thieves climbed over a hedge on Rue Au Page to get into the property on La Villiaze Road.

    Police are appealing for witnesses, or anyone with information to come forward.

    Visit Jersey, external says there's been an encouraging increase in the number of tourists coming to the island and how much they spent.

    The latest figures from the body show there were 672,000 visitors in the first 10 months of this year, a 4% increase compared to the same period in 2016.

    This is reflected in the amount of money visitors spent in the island - £212m, also a 4% increase.

    A 3% drop in business trips and 24% decrease in day trips to the island is thought to have been countered by a 16% increase in the number of leisure visitors, leading to the overall rise.

    More than half of all visitors had never been to Jersey before.
