    A Jersey food bank says it now helps up to 50 people a week during the winter.

    The Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP) runs the bank twice a week throughout the year from its office near St Thomas' Church.

    It says it saw a 120 people in the first quarter of the year alone.

    President Peter Farrell, says numbers have increased significantly over the past few years.

    "I would say about four years ago it changed dramatically. I remember on a normal afternoon, you'd see maybe two people. Now it's more likely to be 20."

    Meanwhile, a recent survey of lifestyles in the island found almost one in three people said their financial situation had worsened in the past year.

    The electrically-assisted mountain bike was found to reach speeds of 33mph.

    Christmas presents could be hacked - IT experts in the Channel Islands have warned.

    Paul Johnson, from IT company Logicalis, said with certain devices people can "if they're in range of the bluetooth, hack in and listen to what's happening near that bluetooth device" using cameras and microphones installed in the gadget.

    He said people can protect themselves by installing updates to software when they become available and by using complex passwords.

    He added he was "not trying to scare shoppers", but people need to be aware.

    The president of Guernsey's Committee for Home Affairs is criticising the non-publication of the two-school model for secondary education.

    The proposals haven't been published yet. Deputy Mary Lowe says islanders need time to fully digest them before the January States meeting.

    Results of an investigation into the idea were initially scheduled to be published in mid November.

    The two-school model proposition was made by the board of Guernsey’s College of Further Education.

    The education committee is opposed to the plans, preferring its proposed three-school system.

    The States is yet to comment on the delay.

    A man in his 20s who was released from hospital in Jersey after an altercation on Friday evening was then airlifted for treatment at Southampton General Hospital.

    A spokesman for Health and Social Services apologised if a previous condition update had caused any confusion.

    The man was taken by ambulance to the airport at about 18:00 on Saturday for further treatment on the head injuries he sustained in the altercation.

    A Guernsey politician who claims to have been abused online by internet trolls is calling for more respect to be shown to deputies.

    Sarah Hansmann-Rouxel has spoken out after a fellow politician highlighted the abuse he received over his stance on overseas aid funding.

    Deputy Hansmann-Rouxel says there can be a fine line between comment, debate and trolling.

    "It is about the negativity and the jumping on you as a politician and suddenly it's more than just debate.

    "It's calling you an idiot, it's like shouting at you online, saying that you are a spectacular failure and what happens is you get a barrage.

    "One person can do that, and post something really quite nasty and negative online, tag you in it, and you'll get notifications each time somebody likes it, retweets it, replies to it, and it becomes this sort of growing negativity around the work you're trying to do," she said.

    A man in his 20s injured in a "physical altercation" in the Hope and Bond Street area of St Helier on Friday night has been released from hospital.

    He was treated at the Emergency Department on Saturday before being discharged that evening at 18:43, a spokesman for Health and Social Services said.

    The Mustard Seed Jersey aid consignment, including the Christmas shoeboxes, has finally arrived in Romania.

    It was delayed by strikes by dock workers in St Malo.

    The shoeboxes contain clothing, toiletries, food and educational items for youngsters.

    Some volunteer groups were unable to go or delayed, but others said they also helped out with medical care while in Romania.

    You'll have the chance to share your views on plans to extend Jersey's student grant scheme today.

    It's the first in a series of drop-in events on the funding package announced by the treasury minister in his budget speech two weeks' ago.

    Students with parents earning less than a combined £150,000-a-year will have all their tuition fees paid, and the grant that goes towards living costs will also go up. The funding will also be made available to more students.

    Today's drop-in session is being held at the Jersey Library between 10:00 and 15:00.

    Jersey's environment minister, a former chicken farmer, says a compromise has to be found when it comes to dealing with a nuisance seagull in St Ouen.

    Deputy Steve Luce says it is not acceptable to shoot the bird, but neither is it acceptable to let it carry on harassing people.

    "We've got two extremes", he says, "the shooting with a rifle on one side and just allowing it to carry on upsetting people at the other extreme, we've got to find a compromise between the two".

    The environment department has received more than 20 complaints about the animal dive-bombing beachgoers, but more than 700 people have signed an online petition, external to save the "friendly" seagull.

    A decision by the department on Gulliver, as he's become known, is expected later.
