Sir William told the Liberation Square audience the convention is "an instrument which arose out of the very conflict which led to the occupation and Liberation Day itself."

He said if people think things are good and shouldn't change they should go out and vote, if they think things are not good they should go out and vote and if they think they don't know enough about those standing, they should seek out the information then go out and vote.

The Bailiff said: "Liberation Day is a time to remember our freedoms, to treasure them and to exercise them at the polls."

He added: "Today is a day about freedom, a special day and I hope like me, you will treasure it."

When the polls open next Wednesday, they will visit polling stations and parish halls, as well as speaking to candidates, political groups and the media.

After the election, the observers will publish two reports - including recommendations for how the island's voting processes could be improved.

It's the first time one of the Crown Dependencies has invited people to oversee an election, but similar visits in other countries have led some governments to change their electoral systems.

There's a lot of different types of food about on Liberation Day.

I've seen stalls selling Thai food, Indian food, fish and chips, burgers, hot dogs, brownies, donuts and ice cream.

None of them were served from a fishing boat like these oysters though...

  15. Stories from Liberation: 'We were raided by the Gestapo'published at 10:49 British Summer Time 9 May 2018

    Rob England
    BBC News Online

Leo Harris was 10 years old when the Germans officially occupied the Channel Islands on 30 June 1940.

Looking across at the Pomme D'Or Hotel from the marina, he remembers long vertical swastika banners hanging from its front and German military officers moving in and out of the large bunker built next to it.

Mr Harris, who now organises the Liberation Day breakfast, says by 1945 he was "a very old 15-year-old" having seen his father and brother hauled off to prison by German soldiers.

In particular, he says he remembers "very thorough searches" by military police officers "who dressed and introduced themselves as Gestapo".

    Leo Harris

Looking back on the hardships of the occupation he said BBC broadcasts from crystal radios and illegal wireless sets gave them word of the invasions of Italy and Normandy in 1944, which gave islanders "a great boost".

Mr Harris never saw the troops arrive in Jersey to raise the flag above the Pomme D'Or, but remembers "it was wonderful to hear the Hampshire accents" when he met liberating forces later on.
