An online petition calling for the government not to increase the duty on petrol and diesel has now been signed by more than 110,000 people.

The Number 10 e-petition has triggered a debate on the cost of fuel in Parliament.

The motion says high fuel costs are damaging businesses and disproportionately affecting the low-paid.

The government plans to increase fuel duty by 3p a litre in January, meaning an extra £1.50 to fill an average car.

The cost of petrol and oil: How they break down in price

Text 81199 with your thoughts

Craig & Hayley Paterson from the Isle of Skye - Dispicable. We nearly ran out of fuel searching for a cheaper option. Even though the boss was paying, we coudn't do it to him. We're on the road every day delivering sheds.

Craig - The cost of fuel is crippling me. I live in south Wales and make a 65-mile round trip daily, spend at least £65 per week and this is money I can ill afford at a time when my employer is cutting back. There is a pay freeze and concerns over job security.

Amy Craignure - on the Isle of Mull the price of petrol is up at £1.56 and has been up as high as £1.59. The prices are ridiculous. Most people fill up their tanks when the are off the island.

Karen from Anglesey - we already pay £141.9 for diesel here on Anglesey. Please no more rises. We can't do without transport here. We don't have great public transport.

Damian in Exeter - fuel prices are just ridiculous. Last time we saw prices hit £1.30 we saw road strikes. Now they're up to £1.40 in areas of Devon.

Ste Unsworth from Darwen, Lancashire - I am a truck driver and there is no work in my town for me at all and what jobs there are are very low paid, so I have to travel daily a 60-mile round trip to Warrington. I bought a diesel car to save on cost but it still cost me £80 every 10 days or so.

Beci Olner - I use £50 a week petrol, yet I only use my car for commuting & the school run. I work 3 miles away. It's disgusting how we pay 6p a litre more than the next town as Nuneaton petrol stations charge what they want. It should be a capped price all over the UK including service stations, who are the worst.

Daryl Brown - Rural communities feel the pressure of rising fuel costs even more. I spend over a quarter of my monthly income just filling up my car and that's just so I can drive to work and back.

Rona Hunnisett - Two years ago I bought a small economical car. Filling up cost £20. Two years on it costs £40. Public transport where I live is rubbish.

Richard Wakeman - Somehow boycott the pumps and hit them in the wallet. That's the only way they will listen. It's easier said than done though as public transport is poor and just as expensive.

Jon Madden - The last petition demanding a referendum on the EU really worked... The whole e-petitions thing is just a joke. The politicians just use it to pretend they care about what we think.
