Bilston's Bert Williams Leisure Centre opens

The new building replaces a 1960s leisure centre

A new £14.5m leisure centre has opened in Wolverhampton.

The Bert Williams Leisure Centre in Bilston was officially opened by the former England and Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper.

It replaces the existing Bilston Leisure Centre, which dates from the 1960s.

The centre includes a health and fitness suite, 25m swimming pool, dance studio, badminton and squash courts, creche and a sports hall.

Earlier in the year, Wolverhampton City Council unanimously voted the site should honour Williams, who played more than 400 games for Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Mr Williams, 91, of Shifnal, Shropshire, played in the 1950 World Cup and was made an MBE last year for his services to football and charity.

The city's mayor Bert Turner was also at the opening ceremony, with councillor Elias Mattu, cabinet member for Leisure and Communities.
