Birmingham charity Oscar helps youngsters with sickle cell

A charity which is financially supported by BBC Children in Need is helping young people with sickle cell disease.

The charity Oscar Birmingham provides mentoring support to patients like nine-year-old Tayshelice, who has to have regular blood transfusions.

The charity looks to "reduce feelings of social exclusion and help to build relationships".

Tayshelice was born with sickle cell anaemia – a disease which is more common in people with an African-Caribbean family background - and she also suffered a stroke earlier this year.

It's hoped that Tayshelice will have a bone marrow transplant in January.
