Flooded cycle path near Bath reopens after pumping

A cycle path near Bath which was shut because of flooding has reopened after four days of pumping.

Some 200 metres (220yds) of the Bristol and Bath Railway Path, which runs near the River Avon, was closed on Sunday as it was under 2ft (24in) of water.

On Monday Bath and North East Somerset Council began pumping work to clear the water away "as quickly as possible".

The authority said the path's drainage system had become overwhelmed by the sheer amount of water.

A plan to improve the drainage is being worked on by the council which says it wants to carry out major improvements on the Bristol to Bath Cycle Path as part of its 2014/15 budget.
