A pub is to close after 17 years as the landlords say they "can't make ends meet" due to the cost of living.

Jane and Dave Martin, leaseholders of the Prince of Wales, in Falmouth, in Cornwall, said they had looked for a buyer for about a year, to no avail.

The Campaign for Real Ale said 15 pubs in Cornwall closed in 2023.

Regular customers said they were "absolutely gutted" to lose the pub and the owners would be "sadly missed".

Mrs Martin said: "We just can't make ends meet."

Mrs Martin said: "It is more than sad. Since we reached the decision, I have felt sick to my stomach. I have cried a lot.

"It was never our intention to come out like this because we love the pub and the people so much."

She added: "We wanted to pass it on so that it would continue, but we have just got to the point of no return.

"We can't keep putting our own funds in to keep the pub going."

The pub will close on Saturday.
