Music and theatre will return to the town hall in the Isles of Scilly when a new museum and cultural centre opens.

The building on St Mary's, used by the Council of the Isles of Scilly, will be refurbished using £4.6m from the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The revamp aims to highlight the islands' rich maritime history as well as creating a community hall, performance and exhibition space.

It will bring previously condemned areas of the site back into use.

Councillor Tim Dean said the project was an opportunity to bring theatre and live music back to the town hall.

"The museum was condemned in 2019 and the town hall stage area was condemned in 2017, so we have a plan to create a cultural centre with the museum in the town hall," he said.

"There used to be barn dances and and balls and music and theatre and this gives us a chance to bring that all back.

"It's all systems go, it's fantastic news."

The council hopes the renovation work will be completed by April 2026.
