Police link knife deaths in Derby flats

Police have confirmed that the deaths of two men at a block of flats are linked.

John David Matthews was found dead in Waterford Drive, Chaddesden, on 25 July and a second man, in his 50s, was found dead in the building on Friday.

Police said both men died as a result of knife wounds and the deaths were being treated as murder.

A 47-year-old man, from Derby, was arrested on suspicion of murder in Whitehaven, Cumbria, on Friday.

Last sighting

Police said the man has been questioned and remained in custody.

Officers want to trace the last movements of Mr Matthews, 66, who was known as Dave and worked as a kitchen porter at Darleys Restaurant in Derby.

The last sighting of him was at his place of work on 9 July.

Police said the identity of the second man will be released when next of kin have been informed.

Officers are carrying out investigations at Waterford Drive and the surrounding area.
