Dorset coastguard mud warning after man gets stuck

A man has been rescued after getting stuck up to his waist in mud in Dorset.

A member of the public raised the alarm after spotting that the man in his 20s had become trapped near Lulworth Cove.

Lulworth Coastguard, the RNLI and Dorset Fire crews were involved in the rescue at 15:00 GMT on Saturday.

Portland Coastguard warned about the dangers of mud after other people were spotted walking in the area shortly after the rescue.

Coastguard officers attended to the man while a specialist fire service mud rescue team used water lances to free him.

He was taken back across the bay by the inshore lifeboat to an awaiting ambulance.

'Distressing experience'

Ros Evans, Portland Coastguard watch manager said: "As the inshore lifeboat left Lulworth Cove to return to Weymouth they reported that a number of people were walking over exactly the same area of mud.

"I urge people to be very careful in the Lulworth Cove area to avoid patches of mud.

"Becoming stuck is a cold, wet and distressing experience.

"If you do become stuck, spread your weight as much as possible and try to stay as calm as possible. Call 999 and ask for the coastguard."
