A GP was left unable to work after she tripped on uneven pavements and ended up on crutches.

The 36-year-old, who only gave her name as Emma, said she was picking up her toddler from nursery in Duke Street, Chelmsford, Essex, when she fell.

Emma said she was left with a "technicolour chin" and had to visit A&E for treatment.

An Essex Highways spokesperson said it took the safety of the county's infrastructure "very seriously".

Emma has called for the pavement to be repaired to prevent further accidents.

"I am shocked that nothing has been done; it is very uneven and cracked and also moves when you stand on it," she told BBC Essex.

The GP said she had been walking home from work when she fell, and was helped up by three passers-by.

"Once the adrenaline wore off, I realised I was hurt a lot more than I thought I was, so I went to A&E," she continued.

"Luckily, it is all just a soft-tissue injury but now I'm on crutches, quite sore, not at work and struggling to look after my two-year-old."

The Essex Highways spokesperson said it encouraged people to report any issues spotted on the county's roads and pavements.

"In order to maximise our resources, we have to prioritise and fix the most urgent issues first. However, all defects reported to us are assessed by an inspector," they said.
