Proposals for the new centre include an eight lane pool

Plans for an £8.4m leisure centre in Grimsby to replace the town's ageing swimming pool have been submitted to the council.

The facility, including a 25m swimming pool, sauna and steam room, will be built next to the existing leisure centre on Cromwell Road.

It will replace the 50-year-old Scartho Baths swimming pool.

In December, North East Lincolnshire Council decided to close the pool despite local protests.

Residents had campaigned for it to remain open and handed in a 6,000-name petition to the council last year, claiming the local authority was "putting money before the community".

But North East Lincolnshire Council said the pool had reached the end of its "useful life, needing millions of pounds worth of investment to make [it] fit for the foreseeable future".
