A court has ordered the extradition of a man suspected of murdering a woman in Italy.

Michele Faiers, 66, was found dead at her home near the Italian town of Casoli in October.

Michael Whitbread was arrested on suspicion of murder in Shepshed, Leicestershire, soon after.

The extradition of the 74-year-old to Italy was ordered at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

Mr Whitbread has seven days to lodge an application for permission to appeal against the decision, prosecutors added.

John Sheehan, deputy chief crown prosecutor and head of the CPS extradition unit, said: "Our thoughts are primarily with the grieving family of Michele Faiers.

"We ask that there be no speculation about the facts of the case which may be subject to appeal, and so that Michael Whitbread can receive a fair trial in Italy."
