Afghan death soldier Jamie Webb's funeral held in Cheshire

L/Cpl Jamie Webb received a full military funeral

The funeral of a soldier from 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment who died in Afghanistan has taken place.

L/Cpl Jamie Webb, 24, from Wythenshawe, Greater Manchester, died in hospital after being injured in an insurgent attack in Helmand Province on 25 March.

Hundreds of people stood in tribute and threw roses onto the hearse carrying L/Cpl Webb as it made its way to St Chad's Church in Handforth, Cheshire.

His commanding officer Lt Col Phil Kimber said it was a "sad day".

The 24-year-old died during his second tour of duty in Afghanistan.

During the funeral service, which was relayed via speakers to mourners outside the church, his father David said his family would "always remember the good times we spent together".

Following the service, there was a private burial at Wilmslow Cemetery.

Before the service, Prime Minister David Cameron paid tribute to L/Cpl Webb's "heroic service to our country" during Prime Minister's Questions.
