Parklife Weekender festival opening affected by weather

Water had to be pumped for the area around one of the festival's entrances

Heavy rain over Manchester has caused the opening of the Parklife Weekender to be delayed to allow organisers to clear surface water away.

Gates at the two-day festival, which is expected to bring more than 60,000 revellers to Manchester's Heaton Park, were due to open at 11:00 BST.

About 2,000 queued in the rain for half an hour, while safety work took place.

The event will be headlined on Saturday by rapper Snoop Dogg and on Sunday by indie rockers Foals.

Advising attendees on Twitter, the festival organisers said: "Best to wear wellies".

The team added: "This is Manchester. A little bit of rain never stopped us from knowing how to party!"

The wet weather has also meant the festival has extended the time for last entry to the site from 17:30 to 18:00.

It is the second year the festival has been held at Heaton Park, following a move from the smaller Platt Fields Park.

Saturday's bill will also see sets from drum and bass quartet Rudimental and singer-songwriters Katy B and Foxes, while Sunday's line-up features hip-hop legends Public Enemy, electronica act SBTRKT and rock band Bastille.
