Prisoner found hanged in his cell at HMP Risley

A prisoner who was jailed indefinitely for manslaughter died after being found hanging in his cell at HMP Risley.

John Kerfoot, 43, was found hanging from a ligature in his cell at the prison in Warrington, Cheshire, at about 0530 GMT on Tuesday.

Kerfoot was serving an indefinite sentence for the public's protection with a minimum tariff of three years.

The Prison Service said an investigation will be carried out by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.

A Prison Service spokeswoman said: "HMP Risley prisoner John Kerfoot was found hanging from a ligature in his cell at 5.30am on Tuesday November 23.

"Staff and paramedics attended. However, he was pronounced dead at 5.55am.

"As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
