Liverpool legends play match for Hillsborough 96

The Celebration of the 96 game was organised by the Hillsborough Family Support Group

Liverpool legends came together for a charity match to celebrate the lives of the 96 fans who died in the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

The Celebration of the 96 game at Anfield saw Kenny Dalglish's UK and Ireland team draw 2-2 against Gerard Houllier's Rest of the World side.

Players including Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, John Barnes, Sami Hyypia, Jan Molby and Ian Rush played in the match.

Hillsborough Family Support Group organised the event.

Robbie Fowler scored the first goal for the UK and Ireland side

Striker Fowler, 39, scored for the UK and Ireland side but then Czech midfielder Vladimir Smicer, 40, equalised for the international team.

After French midfielder Bruno Cheyrou, 35, made the score 2-1, Fowler equalised with a penalty just before the final whistle.

Roy Evans, assistant manager to Kenny Dalglish, said the day was not about the players but the Hillsborough families.

Last week marked the 25th anniversary of Liverpool's FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest at the Sheffield ground.

Ninety-six men, women and children died at the match on 15 April 1989.

A memorial service marking the anniversary was held at Anfield on Tuesday.

Fresh inquests into the deaths of the fans being held in Warrington have been adjourned until 22 April.

They were ordered after the original accidental death inquest verdicts were quashed in 2012 following an independent report
