Ian Church murder: Five jailed for Great Yarmouth pub attack

Ian Church was kicked and stamped on while he was on the ground, the court heard

Four men and a woman have been given life sentences for a fatal attack on a man outside a pub in Norfolk.

Ian Church, 40, had been drinking with friends when he was set upon outside the Bricklayers Arms in Great Yarmouth on 5 May. He died two days later.

The five were convicted of murder at Norwich Crown Court.

Judge Peter Jacobs said the picture that emerged was that of a man lying helpless on the ground, being gratuitously kicked by a large group.

Todd Esherwood, 25, of Saxon Road, and Tony Smith, 30, of Sidney Close, both in Great Yarmouth, must serve 15 years before being considered for parole.

Stuart Layden, 30, of South Quay, Great Yarmouth, was told he will spend at least 13 years in prison.

Mr Smith's 32-year-old brother Roy Smith, of Ranelagh Road, Sheerness, Kent, and the men's sister, Kelly Taylor, 34, of Harris Road, also in Sheerness, must serve at least 12 years.

All five denied murder.
