New walking and cycling routes will be added to the A34 in Staffordshire as part of £9m of road improvements.

The work, including repairs to the route, was due to start on Tuesday on the A road in Stafford and Cannock, Staffordshire County Council said.

Street lights will be replaced initially along with drainage works between Weeping Cross and Queensville.

Most of the work, which was funded by the government, was due to take place in spring, the authority added.

The county councillor responsible for roads, David Williams, said the project would result in "considerable improvements" to the A34.
