Plans to build a business park on the site of a former Yorkshire colliery - creating hundreds of jobs - have been submitted by developers.

Kellingley Colliery in North Yorkshire was the last deep coal mine in the UK when it closed last December.

The site was bought by the Harworth Group, which now wants to build a 95,000 sq m employment space.

Planning consultants Barton Willmore said the park would help to replace employment lost when the mine shut.

The firm submitted a planning application to Selby District Council on behalf of Harworth on Friday.

'Good quality jobs'

Claire Kent, of Barton Willmore, said: "Given its existing infrastructure and highly sustainable location, this is an exciting and significant opportunity to redevelop the site that will replace employment lost when the mine closed late last year and aligns with Selby's economic growth ambitions."

Iain Thomson, of the Harworth Group, said they had been in talks with the council and "other key stakeholders" over the past year.

He added: "Our overriding priority is to bring good quality jobs back to the area."
