Ken Clarke recalls eurosceptic Maastricht Treaty fears

Ken Clarke recalled the 1992 Maastricht Treaty and said that the eurosceptics of the time "should die of shame of the warnings they gave".

The Conservative MP, who served in the Conservative cabinet of the 1990s under John Major, was asked about this week's row over the EU budget which saw Conservative backbenchers help defeat the government.

Mr Clarke claimed the current cabinet was "all agreed" on calling for a freeze in the EU budget - and was working "much better than the Major cabinet worked" over Europe.
